BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Competing in the deepest shot put field in NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships history, University of Michigan thrower Andrew Liskowitz earned second team All-America honors for the second straight year during day one of the national meet on Friday (March 8) to close out a historic season.
The Big Ten champion Liskowitz threw 19.18m (62 feet, 11.25 inches) to finish 13th overall as part of an all-time meet-best 13 men who surpassed 19 meters in the competition, with an all-time-best five surpassing 20 meters. His is the farthest throw by a 13th-place finisher in meet history.
He kicked off his night with a solid 19.11m (62-8.5) for the second-best opening attempt of his 2019 campaign, putting him 11th after the completion of the first round of throwing.
A second-round mark of 18.96m (62-2.5) was not enough to improve his standing, as he dropped to 12th after the second of three rounds in the trials. With one round left, he needed to move up three spots to make the nine-man final for three additional throws.
His best of the day came in that final round, though it was only enough to bump him back up to 11th at the time. He ultimately was overtaken by two other throwers in the late stages of round three.
The second team All-America performance put a cap on a historic indoor season that saw Liskowitz win the school's first Big Ten shot put title indoors and break the school record twice.
Weight thrower Joe Ellis will close the book on the Wolverines' 2019 indoor season -- and his illustrious indoor career at Michigan -- Saturday starting at 2 p.m. CST as he goes for the national title in his signature event. He is the No. 2 seed overall, and will be going for his third-straight first team All-America honor in the event.
