ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Using a 4-0 run to end the first half, the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team took a 6-5 lead and never looked back in a 16-11 victory over No. 18 Johns Hopkins on Saturday (March 30) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
With the win, Michigan improved to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten Conference play. The win over the Blue Jays also marked the first time the Wolverines have defeated JHU, and it was the sixth time U-M has defeated a ranked opponent this season.
The Wolverines used a 5-0 run that started in the first half and continued into the second to take the lead for good before putting together a second run of five goals to solidify the win over the Blue Jays.
U-M outshot Johns Hopkins 35-25, placing 21 on goal as sophomore Caitlin Muir led the offensive charge with seven points, including a career-best six goals and one assist. Muir's assist tied her for the Wolverines' single-season record with 17. Her six goals represent the second-best single-game output in program history, trailing only Kim Coughlan's eight goals against Rutgers in 2017, while her seven points tied the second-most by a Wolverine in a game.
Sophomore Maggie Kane also tied a career best with six points (four goals, two assists), while Nadine Stewart earned her sixth multi-goal game of the season with two scores. Junior Lilly Grass had one goal and three assists, and Erin Daly and Chandler Kirby each added a goal.
JHU won the draw control battle, 16-13, but freshman Kaitlyn Mead won a career-best five late in the game for the Wolverines and Kane and Molly Garrett both picked up four wins. Garrett added one goal on two shots.
In the cage, Alli Kothari got her first start of the season and made three saves in the victory before Mira Shane closed out the contest and made four saves.
The Blue Jays were the first to strike, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game before Stewart netted the first Wolverine goal of the game with 21:39 to play. Johns Hopkins responded with another pair of goals to go up 4-1, matching the largest deficit of the season for the Wolverines.
Michigan and JHU exchanged goals before the Wolverines went on a 4-0 run that started and ended with Muir goals to take a narrow 6-5 advantage into halftime. U-M outshot Johns Hopkins in the first frame, 17-11, putting 11 shots on goal.
The Wolverines promptly won the opening draw of the second half and rushed down the field as Muir found Kane for a goal just 15 seconds in.
The Blue Jays rallied, coming within one goal on two occasions, but each time Michigan answered with a goal of its own before going on a second 5-0 run with just under 10 minutes remaining in the second half. Muir scored the final three goals of the run, with her sixth goal of the game coming with 3:43 left.
Michigan will travel to No. 2 Maryland in a showdown between two of the three undefeated teams in the country on Saturday (April 6). The game is set to begin at 5 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
