ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a Big Ten Conference match to No. 1-ranked Ohio State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon (March 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines were unable to claim the doubles point despite valiant comeback efforts. The duo of junior Connor Johnston and freshman Patrick Maloney battled to pull its match to within two points before ultimately dropping No. 3, 4-6. OSU earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 to earn the doubles point.
In singles play, Michigan's point came from freshman Andrew Fenty. Fenty was the lone Michigan player to win his first set, then battled back from a second-set defeat to win the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-5. The win extends Fenty's streak to 10 and improves his record to 18-4, which is a team high.
Senior Myles Schalet battled back after a first-set loss to win his second set, 6-3, before dropping the third-set tiebreaker, 5-10.
Michigan will be back in conference action next weekend in the state of Indiana. U-M will face off with Purdue on Saturday (March 30) at noon in West Lafayette, then will conclude the road trip on Sunday (March 31) with a noon match against Indiana in Bloomington.
