WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team secured the doubles point and three singles wins en route to a 4-3 victory over Purdue on Saturday afternoon (March 30). Freshman Andrew Fenty clinched the match for the Wolverines after winning the third set of his match at No. 3, 6-1.
U-M earned the first point of the afternoon after winning No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The duo of sophomore Kristofer Siimar and freshman Patrick Maloney breezed to a 6-2 win at the third court, before the combination of sophomores Harrison Brown and Mattias Siimar clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 1.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two straight-sets wins in singles at No. 4 and 6. Maloney earned his 10th win of the season after a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 4, while junior Nick Beaty picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 in his first dual match of the season.
The Boilermakers fought their way back, earning consecutive wins at Nos. 2, 5 and 1 to even the score at three apiece.
Fenty, who would move to 19-4 with the win and 11th straight, clinched the match for the Maize and Blue at No. 3. After winning the first set, 6-4, Fenty would battle back from a second-set loss with a convincing third-set win, 6-1.
Michigan will conclude the Indiana swing of its schedule Sunday (March 31) when the Wolverines will take on Indiana in Bloomington. First serve is scheduled for noon.
