COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team closed out the regular season with a tie for second place at the Missouri Quad Meet in Columbia, Missouri, on Friday night (March 15).
The Wolverines held a lead for the first three rotations but faltered on the uneven bars to allow No. 9 Minnesota to overtake them and No. 19 Missouri to come back and tie them.
U-M started on balance beam, but came through with a solid 49.275 to gain the early lead. Sophomore Lauren Farley and freshman Natalie Wojcik tied for the high score with a 9.900. For Farley it was her fifth 9.900 or better in the last six meets while Wojcik hit the 9.900 mark for the sixth straight meet, and ninth time overall this year.
The Wolverines posted their second highest score of the year on floor exercise with a 49.400. Senior Olivia Karas had her score changed to a 9.925 to raise the score to the 49.400 mark. Wojcik, junior Maddy Osman and freshman Abby Brenner all came in with a 9.875.
Three freshmen were the top performers on vault. Wojcik nearly recorded another perfect 10, receiving the top score from one judge to finish with a 9.975. Brenner and freshman Abby Heiskell each scored a 9.825 with the score being a collegiate best for Heiskell.
Heading into the final rotation, U-M held a .225-point lead over Minnesota. The Wolverines were on uneven bars and the Golden Gophers on vault. Michigan ended up counting a 9.425 as a pair of miscues allowed Minnesota to come back and take the win. Karas was a bright spot for U-M, winning the event with a 9.925 for her third win on bars this season.
Karas finished with wins on both bars and floor. It is the third time this year she has won two events in a meet, giving her 11 total wins for the year. Wojcik won vault for the sixth time and took the all-around crown with a 39.625. She has won the all-around eight times this season and moved into a tie with Beth Wymer (1992-95) for the most career 39.600+ all-around scores in a career.
The Wolverines ended the regular season with a 14-5-1 overall record and were regular-season Big Ten champions. The postseason will start on Saturday, March 23 when Michigan competes in the evening session of the Big Ten Championships at 5 p.m. in State College, Pennsylvania.
