MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team posted NCAA top-four times and NCAA 'A' cuts on both relays to open the Minnesota Invite on Wednesday (Dec. 4) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The Wolverines began the night with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay from sophomore Eric Storms, sophomore Will Chan, senior Miles Smachlo and junior Luiz Gustavo Borges (1:24.24), who anchored the race in 18.41. The three times ahead of Michigan in the rankings all came in the same heat on Wednesday (one California, two Texas).
Later, the foursome of sophomore Patrick Callan, senior Felix Auböck, senior Tommy Cope and senior Charlie Swanson finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:15.96). It is the third-fastest time in the NCAA this season, trailing Texas (from Wednesday) and Texas A&M. Callan lead off in 1:33.52, which is a new career best for the 200-yard freestyle.
The Minnesota Invite continues Thursday (Dec. 5) with a full slate of events. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. CST with finals following at 6 p.m.
