The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team is set to host Cornell (1-1) on Friday (Feb. 1) and No. 18 Oklahoma (5-1) on Saturday (Feb. 2) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
• Michigan is 4-3-2 all-time against Cornell. Most recently, the Wolverines beat to Cornell, 4-1, in 2016 at the Big Ten/Ivy Challenge played in New York City at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Then a freshman, Myles Schalet earned a straight-sets win, 6-4, 6-3, while playing at the No. 6 spot.
• The Wolverines are 2-5 all time against Oklahoma. In their most recent matchup (Jan. 28, 2017), Michigan fell to the Sooners, 4-1, in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off hosted by Oklahoma. Schalet provided U-M its lone point of the match with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 5.
• Cornell comes into the matchup after going 1-1 at the ITA Kickoff in Columbus, Ohio, where they fell to Arkansas (4-3) in the first match, before defeating Virginia Commonwealth, 4-1.
• The Sooners come into the weekend with a 5-1 record, with their lone loss coming at the hands of No. 17 Notre Dame in the ITA Kick-Off final, 4-2, in Norman, Oklahoma. Prior to the setback, Oklahoma did not give up a single point in its five first matches, defeating Abilene Christian, Wichita State, Creighton, Omaha and Drake in convincing fashion.
• Michigan is coming off a 1-1 weekend during which it defeated North Carolina State, 4-1, on Saturday (Jan. 26) to open the ITA Kick-Off in Ann Arbor, before dropping a 4-1 match against No. 11 Baylor on Sunday (Jan. 27).
• Junior Connor Johnston leads the team with a 2-1 record in singles play, while playing at the No. 4 spot in the lineup. The duo of sophomore Mattias Siimar and freshman Andrew Fenty are 2-0 in dual-match doubles play and have a team-leading seven wins on the season.
• The Maize and Blue will continue its seven-match homestand next weekend when it hosts Washington (Feb. 8) and Central Florida (Feb. 10).
