ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics program announced the addition of walk-ons Anne Maxim and Anna Dayton to its roster, while juniors Polina Shchennikova and Sam Roy have both retired from gymnastics and will serve as student assistant coaches this season.
Maxim, a sophomore transfer from Michigan State University, earned one victory on vault and scored a season-high 9.900 on uneven bars as a freshman in 2018. A native of Clinton Township, Michigan, Maxim was a two-time Junior Olympic national champion on bars, a seven-time regional champion and nine-time state champion. She is enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA).
Dayton joins the team as a sophomore walk-on. She is a student in the College of LSA with plans to major in computer science. During her freshman year at U-M, Dayton was the head coach for a co-op women's gymnastics program including several Ann Arbor schools. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dayton competed at J.O. Nationals three straight years, placing third on bars in 2014. She won uneven bars at regionals in 2015 and was a two-time state bars champion.
Shchennikova has medically retired from gymnastics following two years of competition for the Wolverines. She earned two career event titles as a member of two Big Ten championship teams. She scored a 9.900 or better on four career routines and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection last season. She is majoring in sport management.
This was by far the most difficult and most painful decision I have ever made. I am doing this to give myself the best chance at a successful and healthy life. pic.twitter.com/uSr57v4jd6
