The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan softball team (24-7) will host Detroit Mercy (7-16) in a newly added midweek slate at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (March 28) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. The non-conference contest, admission will be free, was added after the Wolverines lost a game to weather last weekend.
• The Wolverines saw their 18-game win streak halted in their most recent outing, a 4-3 loss in the second game of a Friday twinbill at Iowa last Friday (March 23). Michigan outscored its opposition, 113-17, over the 18-game stretch and recorded a .350 team batting average and 0.99 earned-run average.
• Michigan is 1-0 in home games this season after earning a 5-0 decision against in-state foe Central Michigan in its home opener last Wednesday (March 21). The Wolverines posted a 17-0 record at Alumni Field during the regular season in 2017, but fell in their last appearance, a 5-4 upset loss to Michigan State in their Big Ten Tournament opener. U-M is 549-134-1 all-time at Alumni Field.
• Senior first baseman/right-handed pitcher Tera Blanco carries a career-best 16-game hit streak with a .353 batting average, nine extra-base hits and 16 runs batted in over the stretch. Blanco missed two starts a couple weeks ago due to illness, but entered to pinch-hit in the fourth inning against Fort Wayne and knocked out a three-run homer. She also posted a three-run home run against Iowa last Friday (March 23).
• Sophomore second baseman Faith Canfield also owns a lengthy hit streak with a base knock in each of her last 12 games -- one shy of her career best. Canfield, who entered on a 10-game hit streak, has batted .442 over the current stretch with eight extra-base hits and 10 RBI.
• The Wolverines have not committed an error in their last 14 games and ranks second nationally with a .988 fielding percentage -- only Oklahoma has a better mark (.989). Last season, Michigan ranked second in the nation with a .981 fielding percentage, while six Michigan starters boasted fielding percentages of .970 or better, most notably Canfield who has just two errors in 143 touches for a .986 fielding percentage.
• Michigan also leads the Big Ten and ranks 10th nationally with a 1.19 staff ERA. Freshman left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien individually ranks high in several pitching categories, most notably leading the nation with 16 wins already on the season. She also leads the Big Ten with a 0.91 ERA, 3.37 hits allowed per seven innings, six shutouts, a 5.73 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.43 walks allowed per game.
