ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan softball team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday (March 28), defeating Detroit Mercy, 15-0, in five innings in a late-addition midweek slate at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
The Wolverines dominated on both sides of the ball, posting season highs with 15 runs and 15 hits, while Michigan's freshmen hurlers combined for a five-inning no-hitter -- U-M's third of the season.
Michigan earned the bulk of its production in the third inning, plating 11 runs on eight hits and two walks as 12 different Wolverines came to the plate. Sophomore outfielder Haley Hoogenraad earned hits in both of her turns in the frame, including a two-out grand slam deep over the left-center field wall. It is her second home run this season and Michigan's first grand slam. Hoogenraad went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and five runs batted in, coming up just a triple shy of the cycle.
Junior second baseman Faith Canfield also posted two hits and tallied the game's first RBI on a two-out single to right field in the second inning, while junior third baseman Alex Sobczak posted two hits and two RBI, and senior utility Aidan Falk drove in two on a double down the left-field line amid U-M's 11-run third inning.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien (17-2) struck out nine through four hitless innings -- though allowed three walks -- to earn the win from the circle. Freshman right-hander Sarah Schaefer closed it out, keeping the no-hitter alive with two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 top of the fifth.
Michigan (25-7) will remain at home this weekend to host Purdue for a three-game series at Alumni Field. The series kicks off at 4 p.m. on Friday (March 20) and the game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
