Strong First-Half Finish Catapults Michigan Over Detroit Mercy

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 20-0 run to end the second quarter and got a pair of 20-point games from senior Hallie Thome and freshman Naz Hillmon to remain perfect on the year with a 95-62 win over Detroit Mercy on Monday evening (Nov. 19) at Crisler Center.
Thome tied a season high with 25 points on 11-for-14 shooting with four rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. Hillmon recorded her second straight 20-point game, pouring in a career-high 22 points on 11-for-13 shooting with eight rebounds.
Sophomore Hailey Brown rounded out Michigan's double-figure scorers with 10 points and four boards. Junior Kayla Robbins recorded a career-high seven assists, with freshman Amy Dilk matching that as U-M handed out 26 helpers. U-M shot 52.6 percent (41-for-78) from the floor and forced 29 turnovers that led to 33 points.
After falling in a 7-5 hole early in the game, the Wolverines ripped off a 7-0 run, capped by a Dilk baseline jumper in transition to force a UDM timeout with 4:46 left in the first quarter and Michigan in front, 12-7. Michigan pushed its lead to 11 with 2:09 on the first-quarter clock on a sophomore Deja Church layup, forcing another Titan timeout.
Detroit Mercy went on a 12-0 run in the early stages of the second period, clawing back within a point at the 6:26 mark. Hillmon scored on Michigan's next trip down to stem the tide, but the Titans answered once again.
Detroit Mercy took a 37-34 lead on a three-point play with 4:44 left in the second quarter, but Michigan answered in a big way. The Wolverines ended the second quarter on a 20-0 run, holding the Titans scoreless for the rest of the quarter to hit the break with a 54-37 lead. Thome led the way during the spurt, scoring 11 points. Hillmon (4), Munger (3) and Robbins (2) also scored during the run.
U-M scored the first six points of the third quarter on baskets from Brown, Church and Thome to complete the Michigan run at 26-0 spanning both quarters. The Maize and Blue held Detroit Mercy to just 10 points in the third and led 79-47 heading to the fourth.
The Wolverine lead ballooned to as many as 39 in the final quarter as 11 Wolverines found the scoring column in the 33-point win.
Michigan will head to Estero, Florida, to compete in the Gulf Coast Showcase. U-M will face No. 21-ranked Missouri on Friday (Nov. 23) at 7:30 p.m. to kick off the tournament.
