ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman kicker Jake Moody connected for a school-record six field goals and the defense limited Indiana to three second half points as the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan football team defeated Indiana, 31-20, in front of a crowd of 110,360 at Michigan Stadium.
Trailing by two points at halftime, Michigan's defense forced Indiana to go three-and-out on its opening drive and then marched 67 yards on 11 plays before Karan Higdon plunged into the end zone from two yards out to give Michigan a 22-17 lead at the 9:44 mark. It was the seventh lead change of the game.
The teams traded turnovers before Moody connected for his fourth field goal of the game, a 33-yarder, to give U-M a 25-17 lead with 2:08 to play in the third quarter.
On the opening play of the fourth quarter, IU attempted a fake punt near midfield, only to see Devin Bush run the width of the field to cut down rusher Marcelino Ball at Michigan's 44-yard line, well short of the line to gain. Michigan again drove deep into IU territory before Moody booted his fifth field goal of the game from 23 yards out to extend the Wolverines' lead to 28-17 with 9:55 to play.
Indiana responded with a field goal of its own, a 36-yarder from Logan Justice, to make the score, 28-20, with 6:10 to play. Following a lengthy injury delay, Michigan drove 36 yards to the Indiana 11-yard line to set up Moody's sixth field goal of the game, a 29-yarder enabled by the steady hold of punter Will Hart, who corralled a slightly wayward snap and snuck it down just in time to meet Moody's foot.
With 2:37 to play, U-M held a 31-20 lead and the defense finally subdued the Hoosiers, stopping the visitors on 4th-and-12 from their 38-yard line to effectively end the game.

Patterson connected with 11 different receivers in the game, finishing 16-of-28 for 250 yards through the air to go with 68 rushing yards. Higdon finished with 101 yards on 21 carries.
Indiana quarterback Peyton Ramsey kept Michigan's defense off balance with his running ability but the nation's top-ranked defense harassed him into a 16-for-35 passing night. He finished with 195 passing yards and added 51 rushing yards on seven carries. Stevie Scott was effective out of the backfield to the tune of 139 yards on 30 carries (4.6 yards per carry).
Moody kicked a trio of field goals in the opening half, from distances of 32, 30 and 31 yards, respectively, as Michigan built a 9-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Indiana led the game three times in the first half; first at 7-3, following a 13-yard touchdown run by Scott and again at 10-9, thanks to a Justice 41-yard field goal with 7:39 to go in the second quarter.
Michigan responded to each Indiana score, with the Wolverines taking a 15-10 lead on a 41-yard play-action touchdown pass from Patterson to Nick Eubanks with less than five minutes remaining in the half. U-M did was unsuccessful on a two-point conversion and Indiana put forth an impressive drive of its own to take a 17-15 lead with 1:33 to play in the half. Ramsey was 3-of-3 on the drive, including a 41-yard completion and a seven-yard scoring pass to Ty Fryfogle.
On its last possession of the half, Michigan drove deep into Indiana territory only to see the game clock expire with the ball at the Hoosiers' two-yard line. The play-action pass again helped U-M move the ball with Patterson finding Zach Gentry for 41 yards down to Indiana's 15-yard line. Following a trio of run plays and a pass completion to Sean McKeon to the two-yard line, the official in charge of spotting the ball dropped it, and the game clock to run out on the Wolverines.Â
Michigan outgained Indiana in the opening half, 276-249, but IU's two touchdowns proved to be the difference in allowing the Hoosiers a two-point halftime margin. Â
Michigan will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on No. 10-ranked Ohio State next Saturday (Nov. 24) at noon in the regular-season finale. The winner will clinch a spot in the Big Ten Conference championship game against Northwestern on Dec. 1 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
