COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 10-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes gained more than 500 yards of offense and led wire-to-wire in a 62-39 victory over the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan football team Saturday (Nov. 24) at Ohio Stadium.
Ohio State's win sends it to the Big Ten Championship Game against Western Division champion Northwestern. Michigan sees its regular season end at 10-2 overall and 8-1 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines will await their bowl game assignment on Dec. 2.
Ohio State scored 17 points over a span of 5:15 in the third quarter to take control of what was a tense game. A 19-yard field goal at the 8:25 mark preceded a blocked punt with OSU's Jaylen Harris returning the block 33 yards for a critical touchdown to make it a 34-19 game with 4:41 left in the third. Jordan Fuller then intercepted a pass at the Wolverines' 22-yard line, setting up Mike Weber for what would prove to be a decisive touchdown and a 41-19 lead with 3:10 to play in the third.
Michigan tried to mount a comeback at the start of the fourth quarter. As he did earlier in the game, quarterback Shea Patterson looked for Nico Collins on a corner route in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Originally ruled an incomplete pass, the call was reversed upon review and gave Collins his second score of the day. The two-point conversion was no good, making the score 41-25 with 14:11 to play.
OSU immediately responded on its first play from scrimmage, when Paris Campbell went 78 yards on a jet sweep for a 48-25 lead. The score effectively ended any comeback effort for the Wolverines, although each team scored two more touchdowns. Michigan's Ben Mason earned a one-yard score, and freshman quarterback Joe Milton scampered into the end zone from four yards out for his first collegiate touchdown.
Using a steady diet of wide receiver crossing and running back wheel routes, Dwayne Haskins completed 19-of-30 passes for 318 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Buckeyes offense. Campbell had five receptions for 114 yards, while Weber added 96 yards on 13 carries.
Patterson carried the offensive load for Michigan, completing 20-of-34 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns before leaving the game with a lower body injury in the fourth quarter. Donovan Peoples-Jones led the receiving corps with seven catches for 64 yards, and Collins had a big day for the Wolverines with four catches for 91 yards and two scores.
Michigan's top-ranked defense was beset by injuries in the game, and the Wolverines managed just four tackles for a loss with no sacks.
Ohio State struck first in the opening quarter. After forcing a Michigan three-and-out, OSU marched 57 yards on six plays, relying heavily on wide receiver crossing routes with Haskins finding Chris Olave for a 24-yard scoring pass with 11:29 on the clock.
Michigan used a pair of methodical drives to come to within a point, 7-6, following field goals of 39 and 31 yards, respectively, from Jake Moody.
Michigan controlled the ball for 12:13 of the opening quarter, but OSU responded with its own sustained drive and took a 14-6 lead on a 24-yard TD pass from Haskins to Olave with 9:08 left in the second quarter, capping a nine-play, 80-yard drive.
Ohio State got a key defensive stop of its own, then scored again to take a 21-6 lead on a 31-yard hookup from Haskins to Johnnie Dixon. The 79-yard drive was enabled by a pass interference call against U-M on a 3rd-and-17 play early in the series. Facing a 15-point deficit, Michigan responded.
With 47 seconds remaining in the half, Collins pulled down a big-time back-shoulder pass from Patterson on 2nd-and-10 from OSU's 23-yard line to get the Wolverines within shouting distance at 21-13. Momentum then came crashing Michigan's way on the ensuing kickoff. OSU's Demario McCall muffed the kick at the one-yard line and Nate Schoenle pounced on it, giving U-M possession at the nine-yard line. One play later, Patterson eased a wheel-route pass to Chris Evans out of the backfield for a touchdown to make it 21-19.
U-M's two-point attempt was no good and, with just 41 seconds remaining in the half, OSU again answered, driving the length of the field aided by a bevy of U-M penalties. The Buckeyes drove to the two-yard line before, with time running out, kicking a 19-yard field goal to make it a 24-19 game at the break.
