ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- At its annual retreat, the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team came up with the slogan "Money in the Bank" to use for the 2017 season.
"Most years we come up with our team slogan heading in to postseason based on things that have happened throughout the year, but this year we wanted one going into the first day of practice," said senior Nicole Artz.
During the retreat, they talked about the little things that you do every day to build trust in your teammates (deposits) or how you could also do little things to make them lose confidence in you (withdrawals). Money in the Bank does not carry with it any actual monetary value but rather the culmination of team deposits and withdrawals throughout the year.
"We talked about how everything you do from day one, you are either making a deposit or you are making a withdrawal in terms of people's faith and trust in you," said head coach Bev Plocki. "We talked about it in terms of work ethic, respect for each other and acceptance of everyone for their individuality."
One change the team has made to constantly keep them thinking about making deposits is marking the practice plan with a money sign ($) when they do a perfect routine.
"Having that one team slogan, one team goal, keeps everyone's focus aligned," said Artz. "It is what you put in to practice, to the community and to school every single day. Those deposits can really add up."
Coming off a week when the team had several individuals visit the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, cheer on runners and walkers at the Chad Tough run and volunteer at the Buddy Walk for Down syndrome acceptance and inclusion, there are a lot of early deposits to put in the bank.
