FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Led by an opening one-over 73 from sophomore Kyle Mueller, the University of Michigan men's golf team opened play at the NCAA Franklin Regional today (Monday, May 16) with a 303, putting the squad 12th after the first day of play at Vanderbilt's Legends Club.
"Today obviously wasn't sharp at all for us," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "We didn't hit the tee shots we needed to take advantage of the par-five holes, and our putting speed was never quite right. We have an uphill climb, but the guys know they are capable of coming back. We will be ready tomorrow."
Starting their 39th NCAA postseason appearance, the Wolverines played alongside Kennesaw State and Pepperdine. Mueller made his turn at even par after a birdie (No. 7) and a bogey (No. 9). With his second birdie on the 10th, he was one under, before two bogeys on his final two holes pushed him to one over, placing him in a tie for 32nd.
Junior Tom Swanson highlighted the day with an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. After punching his drive just off the fairway, he used his 4-iron from 250 away and knocked it within five feet of the pin. He drained the putt, giving him the eagle. He finished the day at three-over 75, putting him tied for 46th. Using back-to-back closing birdies, classmate Reed Hrynewich posted a 77 and is tied for 60th.
Rounding out the Wolverine starters were senior Chris O'Neill and freshman Nick Carlson, who are tied for 68th after firing rounds of 78.
From each regional, the top five teams and top low individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Finals, to be held Friday through Wednesday, May 27-June 1, at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
