AUBURN, Ala. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team began competition at the Auburn's Tiger Track Classic with athletes participating in three events on Friday (April 8) at Hutsell-Rosen Track. U-M recorded top-five finishes in both the hammer throw and javelin on the first day of action.
Sophomore/freshman Joe Ellis led three athletes in the hammer throw, placing third with his mark of 65.19 meters (213-10 ft.).
After landing 64.92 meters on his opening throw, second among all competitors, Ellis threw 64.84 meters to open the final, before his second throw pushed to 65.19 meters, just three inches shy of the PR he set last weekend (65.26 meters; 214-1 ft.) at the Battle of the Blues meet (April 1-2), which ranks No. 2 all-time at U-M.
In the javelin, senior/junior Stephen Burk finished in fourth place with his final throw measuring in at 59.35 meters (194-9 ft.).
In the triple jump, junior/sophomore Kevin Stephens Jr. had his best mark on his first attempt, jumping 14.78 meters (48-6 ft.). That distance placed Stephens Jr. eighth; one foot and one-half inch shy of his personal best set earlier this year.
Competition resumes at the Hutsell-Rosen Track facility on Saturday (April 9) at 11 a.m. CDT with the women's pole vault. Freshman Brandon Piwinski (high jump) will be the first U-M male athlete to compete, beginning at 11:30 a.m. CDT.
