THREE TO REPRESENT TEAM 40
Juniors Nicole Artz and Talia Chiarelli and sophomore Brianna Brown will represent the University of Michigan at the 2016 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships on Friday (April 15) in Fort Worth, Texas.
THINGS TO KNOW
The first semifinal will start at 1 p.m. CDT and will include Artz and Chiarelli. Artz will compete in the all-around alongside LSU, starting with a bye and finishing on vault. Chiarelli will be with Georgia and will look for her second straight All-America honor on floor when she competes in the third rotation.
Brown will be in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. CDT on Friday. She will compete in the all-around along with UCLA, starting on bars and wrapping up with a bye.
All three individuals earned All-America honors last year. Artz was first team in the all-around and beam to give her five career All-America honors. Brown was second team in the all-around as a freshman, and Chiarelli earned first team for both beam and floor.
The Wolverines have had at least on All-America selection every year since 1992. Artz is one All-America honor shy of cracking the top 10 in Michigan history as Nikki Peters (1996-99) and Joanna Sampson (2011-14) each had six.
Michigan has eight individual NCAA champions in school history. Beth Wymer and Elise Ray each won three titles, while Kylee Botterman (2011 all-around) and Joanna Sampson (2013 floor) are the last two winners for U-M.
Artz shared the NCAA Regional title on beam and was second in the all-around, while Chiarelli shared the title on floor, and Brown tied for third in the all-around to qualify for nationals.
At the end of the regular season, Artz ranked tied for 10th in the all-around, tied for 20th on bars, tied for seventh on beam and third on floor. Brown was 30th in the all-around and tied for 25th on bars. Chiarelli was tied for 21st on floor.
