Wolverines Rebound with Win over Marquette

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team rebounded from two straight one-goal losses to defeat Marquette, 11-8, on Sunday (Feb. 21) inside Oosterbaan Field House. With the win, the Wolverines took a one-game lead in the all-time series (2-1), as U-M and Marquette have gone head-to-head in each of the last three seasons.
Junior midfielder Kim Coughlan recorded a career-high six points, matching her career high with five goals, and adding one assist. Fellow juniors Natalie Carti, Jess Angerman and Anna Schueler also chipped in with two goals each.
With Michigan leading 6-4 at the halftime break, Marquette came out and scored the first two goals of the half to tie the game, 6-6, with 24:47 to play, forcing U-M to call timeout. After Coughlan's third free-position goal, the Golden Eagles tied the game for a second time on a man-up goal at 18:57.
Following that Marquette goal, Michigan held the Eagles scoreless for nearly 14 minutes, while goals from Schueler, Coughlan and Angerman gave the Wolverines a three-goal advantage, 10-7, with 5:13 left on the clock.
On the ensuing draw, Marquette gained possession and went straight to goal, as Julianna Shearer fed Amanda Bochniak for the quick score at 4:59, to make it 10-8 U-M.
Michigan pushed its lead back to three, 11-8, when junior Tess Korten fed Schueler from behind the cage; Schueler caught it in stride a finished with 3:03 to play.
With 2:20 remaining, Marquette's Riley Hill was awarded a free-position shot, but U-M goalie Allison Silber, who entered the game with 18 minutes remaining, came up with the save. Michigan eventually regained possession and ran out the clock to earn the win and improve to 2-2 on the season.
Michigan's defense came up big down the stretch, allowing just one Golden Eagle goal in the last 18-plus minutes of the game. In total, U-M's defense caused 12 of Marquette's 18 turnovers. Sophomore Becca Marchant had a game-high four ground balls, while Schueler, Coughlan and Margaret Metzger each tallied two caused turnovers.
To start the game, Marquette got on the board first, as Shearer converted a free-position goal at 27:38. The Wolverines then answered back with three straight goals (Angerman, Coughlan, Carti) to take control of the lead, 3-1, with 21:34 left in the first half. The two teams then went goal-for-goal for the final 17 minutes of the first half, with Coughlan recording the final goal of the half on a free position with 25 seconds left to put the Maize and Blue up 6-4.
The Wolverines will wrap up their three-game home stand when they host Canisius on Friday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. at Oosterbaan Field House.
