ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team never trailed in the game and used a pair of runs to end the second and third quarters to take a 78-56 win over Vermont on Saturday (Dec. 17) inside Crisler Center.
Sophomore Hallie Thome turned in her first double-double of the season, scoring 18 points with 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Junior Jillian Dunston tied her career high with 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Freshman Kysre Gondrezick rounded out Michigan's double-figure scorers, going for 11 points and three assists off the bench. Michigan held a 42-29 advantage on the glass and got 19 second-chance points.
Michigan held an 11-7 lead after the first 10 minutes, before Vermont tied the game for the second time at 13-13 with 7:13 left in the second. Following a Vermont triple to trim U-M's lead to 19-18 with 5:46 left in the period, Michigan answered with a 15-5 run. Thome bookended the run with a pair of layups, the second right before the halftime buzzer off an out-of-bounds play to give Michigan a 34-23 halftime lead. Thome accounted for six points during the spurt, with freshman Akienreh Johnson going for four points, sophomore Nicole Munger hitting a three and Dunston putting in a layup.
Michigan scored six consecutive points when Gondrezick made good on back-to-back lefty layups, followed by junior Katelynn Flaherty scoring on a fastbreak layup as Vermont called timeout with 5:16 left in the third quarter as Michigan took a 21-point lead (47-26).
The Catamounts trimmed the lead to 16, 47-31, with 3:35 left, but the Maize and Blue went on a 12-4 run to end the quarter with a 59-35 lead when Munger's three-pointer from Gondrezick found the bottom of the net as time expired.
Michigan's lead swelled to as many as 26 in the final stanza en route to its 10th win of the season.
