ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Kysre Gondrezick scored 19 points off the bench to lead the University of Michigan women's basketball team to a resounding 82-33 victory on Wednesday (Dec. 22) at Crisler Center.
American's 33 points are the second fewest of any Michigan opponent in the NCAA era, trailing a 29-point output from Seton Hall on Nov. 19, 2012. Additionally, the Wolverines wrapped up the non-conference portion of the season with 11 wins, tied for most in school history (2011-12, 2012-13).
Junior Katelynn Flaherty and sophomore Hallie Thome each scored 17 points, while senior Siera Thompson added 10. The Wolverines had little trouble finding their shot offensively, shooting 57 percent from the floor. Conversely, Michigan kept the defensive pressure high all game, holding American to 29 percent shooting while forcing 22 turnovers.
The game was essentially won inside, where U-M held commanding edges in points in the paint (+34, 48-14) and rebounding (+18, 41-23).
The Wolverines wasted little time jumping all over American, going on a 12-0 run over a six-minute stretch to jump out to a 17-5 lead. Gondrezick capped a successful first quarter with a corner three-pointer as the first quarter buzzer went off, leading 20-7.
Gondrezick led all first-half scorers with 10 points, with her remaining seven coming on three makes in the second quarter. Michigan led 40-19 at the break.
Michigan continued to get whatever they wanted from the field in the third quarter, shooting 58 percent (11-of-19). The team's 21-point lead at halftime grew to 40, as it went on 17-2 run over the final 5:17 of the frame, putting the game out of reach. Flaherty and Thome were the catalysts, combining for 20 of the team's 28 points.
U-M kicks off the Big Ten portion of the season on Wednesday (Dec. 28), hosting Rutgers at 2 p.m. as part of dollar day, featuring $1 tickets and hot dogs. The contest can also be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
