ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 25th-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Wisconsin on Thursday (Oct. 13) at U-M Soccer Stadium in a double-overtime standoff. For the third straight game and just the third time this season, U-M's opponent got on the board first, as the Badgers scored in the 19th minute of play. Micaela Powers served a cross from the left flag that dropped to the foot of senior Rose Lavelle, who popped it in with her left foot just inside the right post.
Down 1-0 in the 42nd minute, the Wolverines fought for possession from just inside the 18-yard box, directly in front of Wisconsin's goal. The ball was cleared out of the box to where junior Rubina Veerakone stood alone 25 yards out. Veerakone sent a long ball to senior Nicky Waldeck, who got a head on it just enough to flick it inside the left post past Wisconsin goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem. Waldeck's goal is her sixth of the season, good enough to tie sophomore Reilly Martin for the team lead in goals this season.
Michigan switched to a more defensive five-back formation in the second half, holding the Badgers to just two shots on goal, both of which junior/sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jackson saved.
Wisconsin nearly ended the game in regulation as Lavelle got off a shot with 15 seconds left that Jackson tipped wide, and a Badger corner kick led to a last-second shot that was blocked by U-M's defense.
The Badgers got off the lone shot in the first overtime period, but produced six shots in the second overtime, including three on the same play. Off a UW corner kick, senior defender Madisson Lewis cleared the first shot off the line and Jackson followed with a pair of saves, pouncing on the final shot on the goal line to keep the ball out of the net.
With 2:30 remaining, Sydney McGinnis took a long shot from outside the top of the box that nearly caught Jackson off her line, but Jackson back peddled, tipped the shot off the crossbar and then corralled the loose ball to help the Wolverines secure the draw.
Jackson finished with seven saves on the night, as Wisconsin outshot the Wolverines 21-9, with eight of those shots going on frame. The Badgers held Michigan to just one shot on goal, which resulted in Waldeck's goal, and did not allow a Wolverine shot in overtime.
With a 5-2-1 record, Michigan remains in fourth place in the Big Ten standings and will now face No. 15 Minnesota, which is tied atop of the Big Ten at 6-1-1, in a battle of top-25 teams on Sunday (Oct. 16) at noon at U-M Soccer Stadium.
