SEATTLE, Wash. -- After 88 minutes of hard-fought, scoreless play, the University of Michigan women's soccer team conceded the game's only goal in the 89th minute, dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to Washington on Sunday (Sept. 6) in the final match of the Husky Nike Invitational at Husky Soccer Stadium.
In the second half, both teams produced numerous quality chances, with the Maize and Blue holding a slight advantage in shots, 10-8.
In the 68th minute, a Michigan corner rebounded out above the penalty box, where senior Lulu Haidar volleyed it out of the air toward the upper right corner of the goal, but Washington keeper Megan Kufeld tipped it wide and out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, sophomore Taylor Timko cleaned up a loose ball at the far post and her shot ricocheted off the left post and was cleared away by UW's defense.
With the end of regulation quickly approaching, Washington continued to pressure and eventually broke the tie in the 89th minute (88:22), as Dom Bond-Flasza crossed a long ball from the right flank and Kelcie Hedge punched the ball inside the far post on a diving header. The Huskies hung on for the final 1:38 of the game to earn the 1-0 victory.
"For 90 minutes we gave everything we had and we did enough to win the game, but soccer is a cruel sport," said head coach Greg Ryan. "We hit the post and it goes out and then they hit an amazing cross right on the girl's head and she scored a diving header. If you're going to lose, you want to lose on a goal like that."
Michigan held a 7-4 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes of play, with most of its quality chances coming in the final 15 minutes of the half.
In the 41st minute, junior Nicky Waldeck ran onto a ball played forward by freshman Reilly Martin and Waldeck got off a low hard-driven shot at the top of the penalty box, but UW's Kufeld came out to cut off the angle and made the save.
With less than 30 seconds to play in the first half, a dangerous ball got loose in the six-yard box, but sophomore goalkeeper Megan Hinz was there to dive on it and keep it out of the net. Hinz finished with three total saves on the day.
"I'm so proud of the kids for the way they played tonight," Ryan added. "I'm excited for what the rest of the season holds for this team and I can't wait to get back to campus and start working with them."
The Wolverines will now return to Ann Arbor to host Central Michigan on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
