ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team celebrated its second season as a varsity program at its annual awards banquet on Saturday (April 25) at the Campus Inn in downtown Ann Arbor. Sophomore midfielder Anna Schueler highlighted the group of six award winners, being named Michigan's Most Valuable Player.
Schueler, a Chicago, Illinois, native has had a strong presence on both ends of the field all year for the Maize and Blue. She is currently top two in every statistical category this season for the Wolverines -- tied for first in goals (30), second in points (37), second in assists (7), first in ground balls (32) and draw controls (41) and second in caused turnovers (16). Schueler is the only Wolverine to score at least one goal in each of the last 14 games and has scored three or more goals in six games this season, which is tied for first on the team.
Freshman midfielder Molly Fishter was selected to receive the team's Rookie of the Year Award. She is the only U-M freshman to appear in all 15 games this season, with six starts, including each of the last five. The Florham Park, New Jersey, native has tallied three assists, 14 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.
Sophomore midfielder Madeline Dion took home the Valiant Victor Award, which is presented to the student-athlete who ignites and energizes the team. This season, Dion leads Michigan with 26 total caused turnovers, while her 1.73 caused turnovers per game lead the Big Ten Conference and rank tied for 19th in NCAA Division I. The Annapolis, Maryland, native is also second on the team in ground balls with 31 and sixth in goals with 15.
For the second consecutive year, sophomore attacker Tess Korten was chosen by her teammates to receive the HAIL! Award, which is presented to the student-athlete who demonstrates the most passion, spirit and love of Michigan.
Redshirt freshman attacker Bianca Brueckner garnered the P.R.I.D.E. Award, which is awarded to the student-athlete who challenges herself and her teammates each and every day to exceed the expectations of the strength and conditioning program.
Sophomore goalie Allison Silber, a movement science major in the School of Kinesiology, received the Academic Leader and Best Award for the second straight year as the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point-average on the team.
The Wolverines, who are currently 5-10 this season, will wrap up regular-season competition when they host Rutgers tomorrow (Sunday, April 26) at 1 p.m. inside Michigan Stadium. Following the matchup with Rutgers, U-M will travel to the campus of Rutgers University for the inaugural Big Ten Women's Lacrosse Tournament (April 30-May 1, May 3).
