FORT WORTH, Texas -- Senior Sachi Sugiyama and sophomores Nicole Artz and Talia Chiarelli represented the sixth-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team on the final day of the season, combining for four routines in the individual event finals at the NCAA Championships on Sunday (April 19) at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Sugiyama got the day started on floor exercise, performing the final routine of her career in front of the hometown crowd, family and friends. The native of nearby Keller, Texas, absolutely took advantage of the moment, sticking her first pass (full-in piked) and getting big height on the last one (a double pike) to score a 9.900, finishing seventh.
Chiarelli followed Sugiyama on balance beam. The sophomore executed a clean back handspring layout at the beginning of the routine, though she had a small balance check on the side aerial. Her chest was a little down in the double tuck dismount, but she held managed to hold the landing, scoring 9.825, finishing in a tie for eighth.
Artz followed three routines later, scoring 9.8125 and finishing 12th. She had a balance check in the middle of the routine, but it was the only visible error, as she capped the routine -- and her spectacular sophomore season -- with a stuck landing.
The last of the four routines on the day came from Chiarelli on floor, as she tied Sugiyama in seventh (9.900). The sophomore concluded her breakout season with a stuck full-in piked at the beginning, and then
The Wolverines concluded their 39th season of varsity competition with a 27-6 record. This year, Michigan won the Big Ten Championships for the second year in a row and also captured the regular-season title, giving the program a total of 23 Big Ten titles. It reached the NCAA Championships for the 22nd time, finishing seventh, securing the program's 21st top-10 finish. The Wolverines scored 197.000-plus in nine meets (a new program record) and was the only team in the country to score 49.000-plus in every rotation of every meet, not counting a fall once through their 13 meets. They will lose Sugiyama, Annette Miele and Brooke Parker to graduation.
