COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Freshman forward Dylan Larkin set a new career high with five points (2G, 3A), and Tyler Motte (2G, A) and Zach Hyman (2G, A) each added a pair of goals to lead the University of Michigan ice hockey team to a record 10-6 win over Ohio State on Friday (Jan. 16) in front of 8,156 fans at Value City Arena.
Nine different players recorded multiple-point nights, as the Wolverines topped seven goals for the fifth time this season and reached the 10-goal mark for the first time since a 10-3 win over St. Lawrence on Oct. 13, 2011.
The Wolverines have now won five straight contests, the program's longest winning streak since March 2013 and the longest current winning streak in the nation.
Michigan jumped out to a commanding lead with four goals in the first period, and Hyman led the charge with a pair of scores in the first 6:00 of the contest.
The Wolverines scored on their first shot of the game as Larkin controlled puck in the Michigan zone and skated end to end, weaving through Buckeye players. Larkin cut towards the net along the goal line, then fed Hyman driving the net, beating OSU goaltender Matt Tomkins (23 saves) between the pads at 1:38.
On the following shift, Steve Racine (28 saves) came up with a big stop on an Ohio State 2-on-1 chance. Anthony Greco drove down the left wing with puck and fired a low shot on net that Racine stopped with the right pad, steering the puck away at the 2:00 mark.
At 5:36, Michigan took a two-goal lead, as Larkin found Alex Kile along behind the net, where he fed Hyman, who fired a one-timer over the right arm of Tomkins to put Michigan up two goals.
At 13:57, Michigan went on a five-minute power play after David Gust was sent off for a contact-to-the-head hit on Andrew Sinelli. Ohio State's Anthony Greco scored on a shorthanded breakaway, beating Racine over the shoulder at 14:30 to cut the Michigan lead to 2-1.
But Michigan wasted no time responding on the power play, as Larkin and Motte scored consecutive goals in less than a minute to push the lead to three.
Larkin scored on a one-timer from the high slot off a feed from Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves at 15:22. Then at 15:43, Tyler Motte slammed in a rebound off an initial chance by Andrew Copp to push the Michigan lead to 4-1.
The wild open-ice play continued for both teams, as both teams scored twice in the opening 3:05 of the second period. Michigan scored just 14 seconds into the second frame, as Copp took a backhand baseball swing on a deflected shot by Tony Calderone, sending a bouncing puck past Tomkins to make it 5-1.
With Ohio State on a power play a short time later, Matt Johnson's rebound chance beat Racine at 1:42. Then it was Michigan's turn again, as Justin Selman answered for Michigan at 2:36 to make it 6-2, jamming in his own rebound past Tomkins after a long shot by Lohan got through.
Ohio State's Matthew Weis scored on a deflection in front at 3:05 to end the scoring flurry for both teams to start the period, making it 6-3 Michigan.
Motte scored his second goal of the game at 12:08, with Nieves setting up the goal with a great play coming out of the penalty box. Nieves won a loose puck in the neutral zone and chipped a pass to Motte in neutral zone. Motte threaded a pass backwards between in his legs to Selman, who fired a low shot on net. Tomkins kicked the puck to Motte, who jammed the rebound in to make it 7-3 Michigan and chased Tomkins from the net.
Early in the third period, Selman threaded a pass through the slot to set up a Dexter Dancs tap-in at 2:25. Hyman had a chance at his second hat trick of the season, drawing a penalty shot at the 5:00 mark, but new OSU goaltender Logan Davis made a right-pad stop.
Later in the period, Anthony Greco scored twice in six seconds, his second and third goals of the game, to cut the Michigan lead to 8-5. Greco's first goal came on a 2-on-1 at 8:26, and his next came at 8:32 on a shot from the right circle off the inside of the post.
At 14:17, OSU's Johnson jammed in his own rebound to make it a two-goal game, chasing Racine from the net in favor of Zach Nagelvoort (three saves). But Michigan responded just 20 seconds later.
Larkin fed Hyman in the high slot, and the senior fired a shot on net that Davis stopped. Kile put in the rebound to help U-M regain the three-goal lead.
Larkin added an empty-net goal at 18:56 to complete his five-point night and help Michigan win for the 11th time in the last 13 contests.
The Wolverines will continue an eight-game stretch away from Yost Ice Arena with a road series at Wisconsin, starting with a 8 p.m. (CST) contest at the Kohl Center next Friday (Jan. 23). The game will air on the Big Ten Network.
