COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team took a pair of dual meet victories on Saturday (Jan. 28), defeating No. 8 Ohio State by a 194-140 tally and No. 24 Penn State, 264-70, inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The victories help U-M improve to 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in Big Ten action.
On the weekend, junior Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) won three individual events, capped off by a victory in the 100-yard freestyle today with a 44.11.
The Wolverines earned their first win of the afternoon in the 200-yard medley relay, as Miguel Ortiz, freshman Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Stratchcona), sophomore John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy) and senior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) combined for an event-winning time of 1:27.88. The foursome of junior Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va./James Madison), freshman Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), junior Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) and junior Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis deSales) then made it a 1-2 Maize and Blue finish as the foursome tallied a 1:30.38.
Sophomore Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) then followed with a win in the 500-yard freestyle, an event that he ranks No. 2 in the nation in. Jaeger took the race with a 4:23.18, defeating second-place Alex Miller of Ohio State by more than four seconds (4:27.61).
Michigan earned yet another 1-2 finish in the 200-yard individual medley, as sophomore Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) won the event with a time of 1:48.07, while Madwed followed in second with a 1:49.26. Wojciechowski kept the streak going in the 100-yard butterfly, an event where he is ranked No. 4 in the nation, with a 47.76, while Fletcher followed in third with a time of 49.09.
Following Miguel Ortiz's triumph in the 100-yard freestyle by .01, Funk completed his sweep of the breaststroke events with a triumph in the 100-yard event with a 55.54 after winning the 200-yard event on Friday.
U-M sealed the pair of victories in the 200-yard freestyle relay with second- and third-place finishes, as the Ortiz brothers, junior Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) and Wojciechowski clocked a time of 1:20.84 after Ohio State clocked a 1:20.83 in the tight race.
Willets, Fletcher, Whitaker and sophomore Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) closed out the U-M effort on the day with a third-place time of 1:23.16 in the final event of the afternoon.
Michigan returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 4) at noon, as the Wolverines play host to the Michigan State Spartans in the program's final home dual matchup of the season. The meet will also honor the program's five seniors in Madwed, Jan Konarzewski (Warsaw, Poland/LO im Andersa), Chris Morrison (Fenton, Mich./Fenton), Casey Sreenan (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus) and Dane Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams).
