Michigan Adds Local Product Bourque to Signing Class

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball program has added right-handed pitcher James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) to its 2011-12 signing class, head coach Rich Maloney announced today (Thursday, June 9). Bourque is the 11th member of the 2011-12 class coming to Ann Arbor in the fall.
Bourque, who captained the Huron High School baseball team this past season, was named a Rawlings Preseason Regional honorable mention in 2011. He also lettered in baseball as a junior, earning an academic all-district honor with a 3.85 grade-point average, and he played summer baseball for the Ann Arbor Travelers. Bourque lettered in water polo and swimming at Huron, as he was a member of the 2008 state championship team in water polo as a sophomore and the 2008 state championship team in swimming as a freshman. Bourque is a four-year honor roll student and a member of National Honor Society.
"James was an outstanding student as well as an athlete in high school," Maloney said. "He is a late bloomer that we've really made our living on. In my 16 years of coaching, he fits the bill as much as any of the other guys who have ended up being successful for us. He is tall and wiry and he grew a lot in his last year. His velocity has jumped a good 8-10 miles per hour in a year's time. Now he throws in the mid-80s, and we hope he can make another jump as he gets stronger. He has a good fastball and a good breaking ball, and he has a good feel for his pitches. We're excited to have him."
