PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- On the heels of becoming the program leader in career assists and leading the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team to a 2-0 Big Ten opening weekend, senior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 27). It is the first time she has won the defensive honor and the second weekly award of her career.
Zimmerman averaged 12.00 assists and 4.00 digs per set this weekend in wins over Iowa (Sept. 24) and No. 14 Minnesota (Sept. 25), recording double-doubles (assists/digs) in both contests. She dished out a season-high 60 assists and tied a career high with 21 digs in U-M's 3-2, come-from-behind victory over Minnesota.
In Friday night's 3-0 sweep of Iowa, Zimmerman handed out 36 assists to go along with 11 digs and a solo block. With her 36 assists, she broke Linnea Mendoza's (1994-97) career mark of 5,072 that had stood since 1997. She now has 5,144 assists after this weekend's matches.
The Wolverines will hit the road for their next contest, heading to Ohio State on Friday (Oct. 1) for a 7 p.m. contest.
