Wolverines Rally, Reverse Sweep Huskies to Win Fifth Straight Match

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team rallied all night to defeat Washington in five sets (19-25, 27-29, 25-18, 25-23, 15-13) on Thursday night (Nov. 20 ) at Alaska Airlines Arena. The win ran the Wolvernies' win streak to five matches.
Michigan (20-8, 10-7 Big Ten) dropped the first two sets but rebounded to win the third set 25-18 and the fourth 25-23, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set. Michigan opened the set taking four of the first six points, but Washington stayed close, bringing the match to within one three times. Before the media timeout, U-M took back-to-back points, led by a kill from Ella Demetrician to put U-M in front 8-5 at the media break. The teams split the next eight points, but a kill from Lydia Johnson put the Wolverines up 13-9. Washington took the next three points to bring the match within one, but a block from Johnson and Jenna Hanes gave U-M a set point chance. The Huskies took the next point, but after a Michigan timeout, Serena Nyambio and Johnson combined on a block as the Wolverines completed the reverse sweep.
Three Wolverines tallied double-doubles on the night, with Allison Jacobs leading the way with 24 kills and 12 digs. Morgan Burke added a double-double with 26 assists and 15 digs, and Maddi Cuchran recorded her first career double-double with 15 digs and 10 assists. Demetrician recorded double-digit kills, matching her career high of 18 and added four blocks and eight digs. Nyambio helped at the net with a match-leading seven blocks and added five kills. Hanes added two aces on the night along with five kills and four blocks. Camille Edwards collected 21 assists in the match.
Washington (11-16, 6-11 Big Ten) opened the match on a 5-1 run and led for the rest of the set. The Wolverines cut the Huskies' lead to two points at 7-5, 8-6 and 10-8 but were unable to bring the set close early on. Both teams recorded back-to-back points with a block from Nyambio bringing the score to 12-10, but Washington took three of the next four to lead 15-11 at the media timeout. A kill from Jacobs was the first point out of the media timeout, but the Huskies took the next one. Michigan used a 3-1 run to bring the match within two once again, this time at 17-15, led by a kill and ace from Hanes. Washington was unfazed and closed out the set on an 8-4 run to take the first set 25-19.
A kill from Gordon opened the second set, but Washington took the next four points. Demetrician and Jacobs responded with kills, but the Huskies went on a 4-1 run to take an 8-4 lead early. A kill from Jacobs ended that run, but Washington went on another, this time taking a 14-6 lead. Michigan took three of the next four points, led by a kill and a block from Demetrician, but the Huskies took five of the next six to take a 20-10 lead. Jacobs tallied three straight kills and added a block to spark a 4-0 run. A service error ended the run, but Jacobs and Johnson kills brought the set to 21-16. Washington took the next two points, but a kill from Hanes and two aces from Jacobs forced a Huskies timeout at 23-20. Out of the timeout, Michigan committed a service error but then went on a 5-0 run to reach a set point of their own. On the run, Hanes put in some good serves and Demetrician added two kills. The Huskies fought off U-M's set point, and back-to-back kills from Demetrician gave Michigan another set point chance. Washington took the final three points of the set to win 29-27.
In the third set, Michigan opened on a 4-1 run, highlighted by a block from Gordon and Hanes. After the teams traded a couple of points, the Wolverines took five straight points to take a 12-4 lead. The run saw three different players record a kill and an ace from Hanes. The Huskies responded with a 4-0 run, but the teams then traded pairs of points. Back-to-back kills from Jacobs and a kill from Gordon forced a Washington timeout with the Wolverines leading 19-11. Out of the timeout, Washington took the first two points and six of nine to cut the Wolverines' lead to 22-17. After a Demetrician kill and a Michigan service error, a block from Gordon and Nyambio pushed Michigan to set point. Jacobs finished off the set on the first chance for a 25-18 set three win.
Michigan took the first two points of the fourth set with kills from Demetrician and Jacobs. The Huskies took the next four before a block from Demetrician and Nyambio, and a Washington attack error tied the match at four. Washington went on another 4-0 run and worked its way up to a 17-9 lead to force Michigan's second timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, the Wolverines went on an 8-0 run led by Burke from the service line and three kills and a block from Demetrician. Washington kept the lead with a kill, but another Demetrician kill tied the match at 18. The Huskies followed with a 3-0 run to take a 21-18 lead, but a kill from Sydney Schnichels and a block and kill from Hanes tied the match at 21. The Wolverines took the lead with a kill from Schnichels to force a Washington timeout. The Huskies took the next two points out of the timeout, but a kill from Jacobs tied the match at 23. Johnson recorded a kill on the next rally and Michigan reached set point. A Washington attack error gave U-M the 25-23 set win and forced the decisive fifth set.
The Wolverines continue their West Coast trip, taking on Oregon on at 6 p.m. PT on Saturday (Nov. 22) at the Matthew Knight Arena. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
