SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A trio of Wolverines posted NCAA provisional times as the University of Michigan men's track and field team competed Saturday (Feb. 9) at the Meyo Invitational in Loftus Center. Junior Lex Williams(Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter HS) and sophomore Ciaran O'Lionaird(Cork, Ireland/De La Salle HS) each posted NCAA provisional times in the 3,000-meter run, while junior Justin Switzer(Waterford, Mich./Kettering HS) posted a provisional time in the annual "Meyo Mile."
Co-captain Williams finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a provisional and personal-record time of 7:55.59. O'Lionaird followed in his captain's footsteps, posting a provisional and personal-record time of 8:04.05 to finish sixth.
Switzer, who is a returning All-American, finished 10th in the "Meyo Mile" with an NCAA provisional and personal-record time of 4:03.43, shattering his previous record by 3.21 seconds. The "Meyo Mile" is known for gathering the nation's top distance runners; this year was no let down, as three runners posted sub-four-minute miles and seven provisional times.
The Wolverines began day two with junior Adam Harris(Wheaton, Ill./North) placing sixth (6.81) in the 60-meter dash. This was the first time Harris has run in this event since the Simmons/Harvey Invitational earlier this season (Jan. 26).
Junior Andre Barnes(West Bloomfield, Mich,/West Bloomfield) finished 12th in very tight 200-meter dash (22.10) -- less than a second behind Alabama sprinter Michael Cooley, who won the event with a time of 21.29.
In the distance events, junior/sophomore Roger Billhardt(Elmhurst, Ill./York HS), junior Mike Luginbill(Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and sophomore Ricky Fleming(Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) each ran in the 800-meter run, finishing 27th (1:53.42), 32nd (1:54.08) and 33rd (1:54.19), respectively.
The final Wolverine to compete in an event was senior Dominic Smith(Memphis, Tenn./Memphis Central HS), who posted a mark of 49-11 3/4 in the triple jump, finishing seventh -- just 5 inches short of an NCAA qualifying mark.
Michigan will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., Friday and Saturday (Feb. 15-16) for the Tyson Invitational at the Randall Tyson Track Center. Friday's events are slated to begin at 6 p.m., with Saturday scheduled for 8 a.m.
