GRAND BLANC, Mich. -- For the second straight year, incoming University of Michigan freshman men's golfer Billy McKay Jr. (Grand Blanc, Mich./David Leadbetter Golf Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]) will play in the 2006 Buick Open, Thursday through Sunday (Aug. 3-6) at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.
After shooting a two-under-par 69 in a Buick Open pre-qualifier, McKay was scheduled to play in the Buick Open qualifier at Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills, Mich., but received one of eight sponsor's exemptions for the 2006 Buick Open, which will be played at his home course.
Last year, McKay earned a spot in the Buick Open when he played his way into the field by shooting a course-record six-under 66 in the qualifier at Fieldstone. He opened his 2005 Buick Open with a one-under 71 and was tied with PGA notables Tiger Woods, Billy Mayfair, Paul Azinger and Rocco Mediate after 18 holes. He followed with a second-round 84 and missed the cut to play on the weekend.
McKay is one of three incoming freshmen for Michigan this fall along with Ross Millman (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School) and Michael Slovitt (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS).
