Wade Claims Heptathlon Crown at California Invitational

AZUSA, Calif. -- Freshman Bettie Wade (Northville, Mich./Farmington) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team won the heptathlon at the California Invitational, held Wednesday and Thursday (April 12-13) at Azusa Pacific University. Wade posted an NCAA provisional standard of 5,147 points as the only Wolverine to compete in the meet.
In her first collegiate heptathlon Wade set personal bests in six out of seven events (100m hurdle, high jump, shot put, 200m, javelin throw and 800m dash). In the 100m hurdles Wade took second place, earning 925 points with a personal-best time of 14.38. Her second highest point total of the day came in the 200m with a second-place time of 25.57 giving her 835 points for the event. To close out the running events Wade took fourth place in the 800m with a personal-best time of 2:26.64.
In the field events Wade cleared a personal best of 5-6 in the high jump, giving her 830 points with a second-place finish. The freshman Wolverine posted a personal-best distance of 36-0 in the shot put as well as in the javelin throw with a distance of 93-11. Rounding out the field events Wade jumped 18-10 3/4 in the long jump with a first-place point total of 777.
The rest of the Wolverines will be competing in the Sea Ray Relays on Friday and Saturday (April 14-15) in Knoxville, Tenn., and at the MSU Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., on Saturday (April 15).
