PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Three members of the University of Michigan women's soccer team have been named to Big Ten All-Conference teams by the league office Thursday (Nov. 2). The annual awards were given out prior to the start of play in the Big Ten Tournament, which begins today at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa. The fifth-seeded Wolverines compete against No. 4 seed Indiana in today's nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
Senior forward Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa), senior/junior defender Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) and senior goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) were all selected for the All-Big Ten second team. In addition to her all-conference award, Cottrell was honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for U-M.
Coffman, who is tied with fellow senior captain Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) for the active lead in career games played (85), leads the Wolverines in goals with five and ranks second on the team in points (13) and shots (56). Coffman has started all 19 games and tallied two of her five markers in upset wins over No. 17 Arizona and No. 24 Illinois.
Cottrell garnered a spot on an all-conference team for the second time in her career as she was named to the All-Freshman team in 2003. Also one of four team captains, she has started all 19 games for a defense that ranks third in goals-against average (0.84) in the conference and features the Big Ten leader in goals-against average in goalkeeper Tuura.
Tuura's miniscule goals-against mark of 0.54 leads the Big Ten. She has posted an 8-3-4 record and a .855 save percentage, which ranks third in the conference. The senior goalkeeper, who also garnered second team all-conference laurels as a sophomore in 2004, earned the first point of her career in Michigan's first win of the season, tallying the lone assist on Coffman's game-winner against No. 17 Arizona. Tuura then became the program's all-time leader in minutes played in a three-save, shutout performance in a scoreless tie at Northwestern (Oct. 8). She has allowed just nine goals through 17 games played with six shutouts.
A Michigan win in tonight's match would advance them to a semifinal contest against the winner of No. 1 seed Penn State and No. 8 seed Northwestern, who face off prior to U-M's evening affair.
