WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Make it four-for-four after senior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) recorded her fourth straight top-five individual finish, leading the University of Michigan women's golf team to a fifth-place finish today (Sunday, Oct. 29) at the prestigious Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall.
The Wolverines had two total players close among the top-10 en route to a fifth-place showing at the Landfall Tradition as the Maize and Blue tallied a 917 54-hole total over the three-day tournament. Michigan set the pace, sitting in first place after Friday's first round and tallying a 300, as Broderick led the tournament field with an even-par 72.
Michigan slipped in Saturday's second round, as a few mistakes around the course added up and the Wolverines lost their lead in the second round, however, posting a 315 second-round total, to leave them tied for fourth heading into the tournament's final round.
Starting the final round 19 strokes behind tournament-leading Virginia, the Wolverines posted a strong 302 third-round total behind a final round, one-over 73 from senior Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) and Broderick's two-over 74 to help give U-M a 917 tournament total and fifth place finish.
Individually for the Wolverines, Broderick led the way with her fourth consecutive top five finish, tying for third with a 222 54-hole total. After her even-par 72 in round one, Broderick recorded a 76 second-round total which left her sitting in third after day two. She began day three with a slow start, posting two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine for three-over par at the turn. Despite two more bogeys on the back nine, Broderick countered with three birdies to give her a closing two-over 74 and her fourth straight top five tournament finish.
Stinson joined Broderick among top-10 finishers, tying for 8th after leading the Wolverines in the tournaments final round with a one-over 73. After tallying rounds of 77 and 76 during the first two days, she played steady golf for the first nine holes of day three, posting one bogey and eight pars for a one-over mark at the turn. She finished strong with even-par golf on the back nine, beginning with a birdie on No. 9 before bogeys on No. 12 and No. 15 left her two-over par with three holes remaining. Stinson sandwiched a birdie between two pars leaving her with a 226 total and her fourth top-10 finish of the season.
Freshman Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) tied for 25th with a career-best 234 total. After opening with a career-best five-over 77 in day one, Ratigan posted an eight-over 80 before coming back with another 77 in the tournament's final day.
Other Wolverine finishes include: freshman Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS), tied for 32nd with a 237 total (74-83-80) and junior Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), tied for 41st with a 243 total (81-84-78).
Overall, three schools tallied team marks under 300 in the tournament's final round, hoping to catch Virginia, who led Michigan State by 11 strokes after day two. While the Cavaliers (301-295-306/902) hung on for a first-place tie, the Spartans recorded a 13-over 295 after rounds of 305 and 302 to match Virginias 54-hole team total of 902. Third-place New Mexico finished two strokes behind the leaders (309-302-293/904).
It was Michigan State's Sara Brown who earned the individual honors with a one-under, 215 54-hole total. It was Brown who overtook Broderick on day two with a tournament-best, three-under 69 before finishing strong with an even-par 72. Wake Forests Mandy Goins took second (77-72-70/219) while New Mexicos Mikaela Backstedt tied with Broderick for third (77-73-72/222).
The Wolverines will have two weeks off before closing their fall season, over the Thanksgiving break, with a trip to Poipu, Kauai, Hawaii, Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 22-23, for the Aloha Purdue Collegiate Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Kiahuna Golf Club, and will be a split tournament with men's and women's programs.
