Michigan Falls at Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Penalty Kick

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 road loss to the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers on Friday (Oct. 13) on Engelmann Field.
In his first collegiate start, senior/junior goalkeeper Ryan Bennett's (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) grabbed four saves and held the Panthers scoreless until the 67th minute. At the 66:47 mark, the Panthers were rewarded a penalty kick after drawing a foul in the box. For the second game in a row, the Maize and Blue relinquished a successful penalty kick as Craig Mallace beat Bennett for the eventual game-winner, giving UWM a 1-0 lead.
At the 25:09 mark sophomore Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day HS) put sophomore Jake Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) in position to take his first of two shots on goal. Bonnell's pass gave Stacy a one-on-one with UWM's goalkeeper Ryan German, but the keeper earned his second save of the match.
In the 27th minute Stacy tested Germann for the second time, only to come away scoreless again. Senior Bobby Trybula (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Mueller) slipped the ball to Stacy, who took a shot from 16 yards out, but the keeper knocked the ball off the post.
In the second half, Michigan remained consistent in its attack, taking seven shots and one corner kick to match its stats from the first stanza. At the 59:25 mark, Trybula took his second shot on goal after sophomore Alex Morisset (Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle HS) found senior tri-captain Kevin Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central HS) with the ball, allowing Hall to set up Trybula. Trybula received the pass with his back to the goal, spun to his right, and blasted a left-footed shot from 18 yards out, forcing another Germann save. For the first time of the season Trybula led Michigan's attack with three shots with two on goal.
On the defensive end, Bennett made all four of his saves in the second half, including a big stop in the 80th minute. The Maize and Blue began to push up field to search for the game-tying goal, which allowed the Panthers offense to slip into U-M's defensive third. After the ball was played over the top of a U-M defender, a UWM player took a shot from 16 yards out on the right flank, but Bennett came out and made a great save.
In the 86th minute the Wolverines put together a possession clinic, making 12 passes to set up Bonnell's lone shot on goal. Michigan took a total of seven shots on goal to UWM's five, but Germann grabbed seven saves, with four coming in the first half.
The Wolverines will vie for its first Big Ten win of the season when they challenge the Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday (Oct. 15, 2 p.m .CDT) at the Leonard B. Thomas Complex in Evanston, Ill.
