Bruck Helps U-M Capture State of Michigan Classic Title

KALAMAZOO, Mich -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics captured its eighth crown at the State of Michigan Classic with a season-high score of 196.750 Sunday afternoon (Feb. 6) at the University Arena. The Wolverines placed ahead of No. 16 Michigan State (195.275), No. 20 Central Michigan (194.800), Western Michigan (192.050) and Eastern Michigan (191.325).
Michigan swept the all-around competition with sophomore Lindsey Bruck (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) leading the way with a 39.525 and event titles on uneven bars and balance beam, followed by junior Jenny Deiley's (Dayton, Minn./Elk River) 39.475 and fifth-year senior Elise Ray's (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) third-place finish with 39.250.
U-M posted its third highest score of the season on the floor exercise with 49.150 points in the first rotation, led by a pair of 9.875 performances from Deiley and Bruck. Senior Shanna Duggan (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Basil Secondary) recorded her second best score of the season on floor with a 9.850 in her first event against her former Central Michigan teammates.
The Wolverines stayed ahead of the pack after squeaking out a 49.000 team score on vault in the third rotation thanks to a 9.900 from Deiley and a season-high 9.850 from Bruck. In the fourth rotation, Michigan tallied 49.125 points on bars with a 9.850 score by Bruck. Freshman Katie Lieberman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) competed in her first collegiate bar routine, scoring a 9.825.
Heading into the final rotation leading by 0.875 over second-place Michigan State, the Wolverines equaled their best beam score in program history with 49.525 points thanks to four scores of 9.900 or better, including a career-best 9.950 from Bruck. Ray tied a season high with 9.925, while Deiley and Duggan set new season highs with scores of 9.900. Duggan's score also tied her career best, set in 2002 with Central Michigan.
Michigan travels to New Hampshire on Saturday (Feb. 12) for a quad meet with the host Wildcats, No. 16 Michigan State and Northern Illinois University. The action begins at 7 p.m.

Michigan's beam score of 49.525 tied a program record set in 2000 at the Big Ten Championships.
The Wolverines' 196.750 team score is their highest of the 2005 season.
Fifth-year senior Elise Ray's streak of consecutive bars titles was snapped at eight at the State of Michigan Classic. Her streak of 16 straight scores of 9.900 or better also ended with a 9.800.
Junior Jenny Deiley had a season-high 9.875 on floor and a season-best 9.900 on beam. She also posted her third straight score of 9.900 or better on vault, winning the 11th vault title of her career.
Sophomore Lindsey Bruck recorded career highs on beam (9.950) and the all-around (39.525) in winning both events. She also had a season-high 9.850 on vault and tied her season high with a 9.850 on bars, winning her first career title on the apparatus. Bruck has five beam titles to her credit as well as two all-around crowns, both earned in 2005.
Freshman Katie Lieberman scored a 9.825 in her first collegiate bars routine.
Senior Shanna Duggan tied a career best on beam with a 9.900, tying for third.
Junior Becca Clauson tied a season high with 9.850 on beam.
Fifth-year senior Elise Ray celebrated her birthday on Sunday.
