DURHAM, N.H. -- Junior Jenny Deiley (Dayton, Minn./Elk River) won the vault, floor exercise and the all-around competition to lead the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team to a first-place finish with 196.225 points at the 20th annual Fox Run Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 12) at the Whittemore Center.
Sophomore Lindsey Bruck (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) added a second-place finish on the balance beam and in the all-around to give U-M its widest margin of victory of the season, over second-place No. 23-ranked Michigan State (193.100), host New Hampshire (192.700) and Northern Illinois (190.450).
Individually, the Wolverines won outright titles on uneven bars, beam and the all-around while sharing vault and floor crowns. Michigan dominated each event, placing four athletes among the top five on bars and beam and three among the top five on vault and floor in a field of 24 competitors on each apparatus.
In Michigan's first rotation, Deiley recorded a season-high 9.900 for Michigan's highlight routine on the floor exercise, putting the Wolverines ahead of second-place New Hampshire. Junior Becca Clauson (St. Paul Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) garnered a 9.825 after battling the flu the previous week, while Bruck also registered a 9.825.
Deiley anchored U-M on vault with a score of 9.850 to end the second rotation, keeping the Wolverines ahead of second-place New Hampshire by 0.950 points. Bruck and fifth-year senior Elise Ray (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) scored a pair of 9.825s, while senior Shanna Duggan (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Basil Secondary) put up a 9.800.
Ray returned to form on the uneven bars with a 9.900 one week after her streak of consecutive routines of 9.900 or better ended at 16 at the State of Michigan Classic. Deiley posted a 9.875 for her second-highest score of the season on the apparatus, while freshman Katie Lieberman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) scored a 9.800 in her second collegiate routine to help U-M pull ahead by 2.375 points heading into the final rotation.
Heading into its strongest event, the balance beam, Michigan posted four straight sub-9.800 scores, leaving less room for error for Bruck and Ray, who were set to compete in the fifth and sixth spots. Bruck hit her routine, garnering a 9.850, while Ray nailed the event, scoring a 9.875 and helping the Wolverines to their fourth-best overall score of the season.
Michigan hosts the Coaches Care Challenge when West Virginia travels to Crisler Arena on Friday (Feb. 18) at 7:30 p.m. The Coaches Care Challenge is hosted by Laurie Carr, wife of Michigan head football Lloyd Carr, and is a fundraiser benefiting cancer research and treatment at the U-M hospital.
