IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated Iowa 4-1 on Sunday (Oct. 16), outshooting the Hawkeyes 19-8. Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) tallied four points in the game with a goal and two assists. Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) netted two goals, including the game-winning marker on a penalty kick at 23:27. Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) scored her third goal in four games while also adding an assist.
Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) played 69 minutes before being replaced by Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) with Michigan up 4-0. Tuura made three saves and picked up her fifth win of the season.
The Wolverines wasted no time scoring the first goal of the game at 12:42. Dobbyn took a long ball from the weak side from Heaton, trapped it behind the Iowa defense, and went one-on-one with Iowa goalkeeper Erin MacIsaac, burying a shot to make the score 1-0. Coffman added to the lead at 23:27 on a penalty kick. Coffman was fouled in the box but took advantage of the penalty kick opportunity to put the Wolverines up 2-0 going into halftime.
The Wolverines came out strong in the second half, extending their lead at 56:52 on a goal by Heaton. Dobbyn fed a through ball to Heaton, who beat the goalkeeper on a shot from the top of the box to make the score 3-0. Less than six minutes later, Coffman netted her second goal of the game at 62;18. Coffman took a pass from Heaton, created space with the dribble and buried a shot past MacIsaac to move the score to 4-0.
The Maize and Blue nearly earned its first shutout of the season, but Iowa cut the lead to 4-1 at 72:10 when Stephanie Hyink volleyed a cross from Jamie Maltman past Gates. Michigan kept the pressure on the remainder of the game and left Iowa City with a 4-1 triumph.
Michigan returns home next Friday (Oct. 21) to face the top-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Field.

NOTES
Therese Heaton tallied four points with a goal and two assists. This marks the second time this season she has tallied four or more points in a game. She netted a hat trick against Western Michigan (Sept. 16) earlier this season.
Heaton now has six assists, eight goals and 22 points this season. Her six assists are a career-best season total. She is two goals and two points shy of tying her career-best season total in goals (10) and points (24) which she accomplished in 2002 as a freshman.
Heaton's 74 career points are five points shy of Jessica Limauro's (1995-98) 79 career points for fourth all-time in Michigan women's soccer history. Heaton's 28 career goals are two shy of Ruth Poulin (1994-97) for fifth place in all-time goals, and she moved to within one assist of Debbie Flaherty (1994-97) for fifth place all-time in assists with 19.
Judy Coffman notched her first career two-goal game. Her first goal, a penalty kick goal, was her team-leading second game-winning goal of the season. She scored the game-winner against Northwestern earlier this season on Oct. 7 in a 3-2 Michigan win. She is third on the team with five goals on the season.
Megan Tuura started her 50th career game, making three saves for her 25th career win.
With her assist on Melissa Dobbyn's first-half goal, Katelin Spencer equaled her career-best season total in assists with three, which she accomplished last season.
Melissa Dobbyn increased her team-leading goal total to 10 with her first-half goal, surpassing her 2004 goal total of nine. This is the Wolverines' highest individual goal total since 2002, when Abby Crumpton (1999-2002) scored 11 in her senior season.
Dobbyn extended her streak of being the only Wolverine to record a shot in every game this season. She has had a shot in 23 games dating back to last season. Her only collegiate game without a shot came in a 1-0 win over Indiana on Oct. 10, 2004, in which she assisted on the lone goal of the game.
Katie Bohard saw her first action of the season as a reserve. She last played in the final game of last season in the NCAA Tournament against Detroit (Nov. 12).
Lindsey MacDonald recorded a career-high two shots in the game.
The Wolverines improved to 10-0-0 all-time against Iowa.
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On winning today's game going into next weekend ... "It's huge for us. We really need these next four games. Certainly with playing Penn State on Friday, this is a good build-up to it. We want a chance to knock off the first team in the country and we're excited to be able to do that at home."
On the defensive play ... "We were hoping for out first shutout in a long time. We really did play well defensively and everybody played really hard. Everybody got to play as well. Some people had some good showings."
On the play of Therese Heaton, Judy Coffman and Melissa Dobbyn ... "They are contributing to our points. They are the key to our offense. People know about them and they are being marked tight, but they're finding ways to put in goals."
On winning the final road game of the season ... "We've struggled on the road. Just to be able to finish our road season with a win on the road is really encouraging. We're hoping to play into the postseason and get on the road again."
