LONG BEACH, Calif. -- USA Swimming has announced that Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS), a senior on the 2003-04 University of Michigan men's swimming team, has been added to the Olympic roster for the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece. Ketchum finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle on Friday (July 9) with a time of 1:48.67 at the U.S. Olympic Trials. While the fifth-place finish did not merit an automatic roster spot, Ketchum was later added to the squad as a member of the 800-meter freestyle relay team.
Ketchum is the third Wolverine from this past season's team to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games. Junior Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) placed third in the 200-meter freestyle to qualify for the U.S. 800-meter freestyle relay squad, and senior Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalger HS) made the Canadian team in the 400-meter freestyle.
Former Wolverine Tom Malchow (1996-99) will also represent the U.S. in the 200-meter butterfly. Malchow, who won the gold medal in the event at the 2000 Olympics and was the silver medalist in 1996, finished second in the 200 fly at the trials with a time of 1:57.37. Club Wolverine member Klete Keller has qualified in the 200-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle and the 800-meter freestyle relay. Keller posted a first-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle with a U.S. Open record time of 3:44.19.
The U.S. national team will be selected based on the results of the Olympic Trials. First priority will be given to the top four finishers in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events and the top finisher in all other events. Second priority goes to the second fastest swimmer in every event except for the 100- and 200-meter freestyle. Third and fourth priority go to the fifth and sixth fastest athletes, respectively, in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle. A maximum of 26 swimmers will be chosen to be a part of the national team.
Four current and former Wolverines will be in action at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Tuesday (July 13), with Vanderkaay, Brendan Neligan (Briarwood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) and 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Chris Thompson (1998-2001) swimming in the 1,500-meter freestyle preliminaries and Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) competing in the 100-meter butterfly final. The trials conclude Wednesday (July 14).
