Three in Top 15 Help Wolverines to Third at Miccosukee

MIAMI, Fla. -- With three Wolverines finishing in the top 15, the University of Michigan women's golf team opened its spring season with a third-place team finish at the Miccosukee Championship, hosted by Florida International on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 16-17) at the Miccosukee Resort. The Maize and Blue finished just seven strokes out the top spot with a 943 54-hole tournament total after team rounds of 322, 310 and 311.

As for the Wolverines, junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) led the Wolverines for the fifth straight tournament as she was fifth with a 230 total. After opening with a five-over 78, she rallied in the second round with a one-over 74 to put herself in the top five after the first day. She closed out the tournament with another 78 to put her in the fifth spot; helping her to her second top-five finish of the season.
Freshman Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) continued to show signs of improvement as she recorded her career-best and second top 10 finish of the season, tying for eighth with a 235 total. After opening with an 83 in the first round, she shook off the winter rust and fired a two-over 75 in the second round. She fired a team-low 77 in the final round to put her in the top 10.
Consistency continued for sophomore Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) as she tied for 14th with a 238 total, her fourth top 20 finish of the season. After opening the tournament with back-to-back 80s, she came back strong in the final round with a 78 to help her give the Wolverines three top 15 finishers.
Other Michigan finishes included: freshman Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), tied for 33rd (81-85-78/244), and sophomore Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), tied for 35th (84-81-80/245). Playing as individuals were: sophomore Kelly Easton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS), tied for 33rd (82-83-79/244); senior Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day), tied for 51st (82-82-86/250); senior/junior Courtney Goebel (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS), 64th (95-82-85/262); and redshirt freshman Molly Spalding (Monroe, Mich./Monroe), 66th (92-86-86/264).
The Wolverines continue their spring season as they travel to Dorado, Puerto Rico, Sunday through Tuesday (Feb. 22-24) to play in the Maize and Blue's toughest spring tournament, the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Dorado Del Mar Country Club. The 54-hole tournament will feature a prestigious 15-team field including 10 top 25 programs. The Dorado Del Mar course will be set for a par 72 and 6,000 yards.
