Olin, Season Bests Carry Michigan at Lady Puerto Rico

DORADO, Puerto Rico -- The University of Michigan women's golf team took a ninth-place team finish after recording a season-best 923 54-hole performance at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, Sunday through Tuesday (Feb. 22-24) at Dorado Del Mar Golf Course. The Wolverines improved over the course of the three-day tournament, lowering their team total each round. The Maize and Blue tallied a 315 Sunday, shot 307 on Monday and closed with a 301 to give them the ninth-place finish in the prestigious Lady Puerto Rico field.

As for the Maize and Blue, junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) led the Wolverines for the sixth straight tournament, finishing in a tie for 23rd with a 225 total. After opening with a 77 first-round total, Olin rebounded with back-to-back two-over 74s for her seventh straight top-25 finish of the season.
Freshman Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) turned in a career performance, setting top totals for her young career. She finished second for the Maize and Blue with a career-best 228 54-hole total (79-76-73). Broderick also set another personal best with her clutch 73 to close out the tournament, outdoing her previous low of 74 set in September.
Other Michigan finishes included: sophomore Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS), 41st (77-81-73/231); freshman Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary), tied for 59th (82-79-81/242); and sophomore Brandi Zielinski (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), 70th (88-78-85/251). Playing an individual, Kelly Easton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS) tied for 55th (81-76-83/240).
The Wolverines will have three weekends off before hitting the links again. The Maize and Blue will head to the West Coast and Irvine, Calif., Monday and Tuesday (March 15-16) for the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Coto de Caza Country Club. Last year, the Wolverines finished third in UC Irvine's tournament with a 929 total (314-302-313).
