EAST LANSING, Mich. -- One day after its 2-0 victory over No. 22 Loyola Marymount, the University of Michigan men's soccer team improved to 2-0 today (Monday, Sept. 1) as the Wolverines downed Xavier 1-0 at the Michigan State Invitational behind Knox Cameron's (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) game-winner at 65:26 on Old College Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) anchored the defense with four saves en route to his second consecutive shutout of the season.
The game's lone goal came on a well constructed play orchestrated by junior Dawson Stellberger (Crested Butte, Colo./Crested Butte Academy), senior tri-captain Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and Cameron. With the ball at his feet near midfield, Stellberger saw Cameron break toward the Musketeer goal on a dead sprint but also saw White sit in between the two.
As Stellberger sent the ball Cameron's way White dummied like he was going to accept the pass, drawing the defense. This allowed the ball to sneak through to Cameron's feet with only the Xavier keeper, Ty Helmle, to beat. After a quick set, Cameron sent a low line drive to the left side of the goal mouth for his seventh career game-winning tally.
Michigan begins the home portion of its 2003 schedule this weekend when the Wolverines welcome Dayton and Evansville to the U-M Soccer Field for a pair of non-conference affairs. U-M will face Dayton in the home opener Friday (Sept. 5) at 6 p.m. then return to the pitch Sunday (Sept. 7) for a 4 p.m. matchup with Evansville.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "This was a good tactical game, one which I think our team can learn a lot from. We will see teams that play this style of soccer, and to be able to come away from this game with a win will do nothing but build our guys confidence for the rest of the season."
N O T E S
With the victory the Wolverines open the season 2-0 for the third time in program history. Michigan began both the 2000 and 2001 seasons with an umblemished 2-0 record.
Dawson Stellberger collected his first career point with the game-winning assist to Knox Cameron.
It marks the second consecutive year Cameron has scored at least one goal in each of Michigan's first two matches. Last year Cameron netted a pair of goals against both UC-Santa Barbara and Wright State.
