ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team opened its 2003 home campaign with a 4-2 loss against Dayton Friday night (Sept. 5) at the U-M Soccer Field. Senior tri-captain Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and junior Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) provided the firepower for the Wolverines (2-1) as they scored one goal apiece.
Dayton midfielder Tye Stebbins opened the scoring near the end of the first half, sending a shot past Michigan goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) at the 44:13 mark. The play began with forward Chris Rolfe making a nice move along the left sideline to shake the Wolverine defender. Rolfe sent a lob pass to the middle of the six-yard box where Stebbins was able to redirect the ball to the back of the net to give the Flyers the 1-0 advantage.
Dayton (1-0) extended its lead early in the second half on a goal by midfielder Dasan Robinson at 51:00. Rolfe again earned the assist as he started the play by sending a centering pass through the air in front of the Michigan net. Dzubay exited the net and came out to play the ball seven yards from the goalmouth, but Robinson beat him to it and sent a header to the back of the net for a 2-0 Dayton advantage.
White put the Wolverines on the board at the 55:08 mark with his first goal of the year, on an assist by junior midfielder Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS). Cameron played a through ball to a charging White as the senior tri-captain entered the Flyers' six-yard box. As the Dayton goalkeeper charged out of the net to take the control of the ball, White won the race to the ball and chipped it inside the left post to cut the Flyers' lead to one goal.
Dayton responded less than five minutes later to reclaim its two-goal advantage as Flyer midfielder Christian Porto sent a rebound to the back of the net at 59:57. Rolfe's initial shot from the left side of the field was knocked away by Dzubay, however, the ball remained in the Michigan goal box and bounced high in the air where Porto was able to win the jump and score the game-winning tally.
Michigan cut into the Flyers' lead to one once again when Turpin scored at the 68:59 mark. Senior forward Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS) sent a centering pass into the Flyers six-yard box from 10 yards out, and Turpin collected the ball and sent a laser to the left-center of the net, making the score 3-2 in favor of Dayton.
The Flyers responded just over a minute later when George Nanchoff sent a blistering shot into the upper left corner from 25 yards out at the 70:06 mark.
The Wolverines return to the pitch Sunday afternoon (Sept. 7) when they host Evansville at 4 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field. Michigan defeated the Purple Aces 6-0 in Evansville last season.

Q U O T E S
U-M Senior Midfielder Mike White
On his goal ... "We have been working on the combination runs up top all week. I made a run and Knox (Cameron) played a great ball. All I had to do was touch it in. The keeper came out early, so I was fortunate to put it in."
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the Dayton's quick response to Michigan goals ... "Isn't that the great thing about soccer Whoever takes care of their chances is going to win the game, because everyone is going to get them. It was just their day. They took care of more of them than we did. We certainly created a lot, so there are not a lot of problems with our attack. I think we have to look at how we get back to limiting chances and going from there. We will stay positive from this. That is a good team."
On Peter Dzubay's performance ... "When a team has a guy like Chris Rolfe, who can, with very little back swing and very little body language, get shots on net, it keeps your keeper on the line a lot more. It keeps them from making exits. I think that was part of the reason Dzubay wanted to stay on the line a little more, to prevent that kid from getting the head up and curling balls in. I think it is just something that that is where we are as a team and we just keep working at getting better."
On Mike White's goal ... "It is great to see this team is able to rebound and get themselves back into the game. Once you get back in the game, you have to seize that momentum and make it yours for as long as possible. We seemed to seize momentum, but then give it right back to them. That is just the psychology of the sport of soccer. We have not had a lot of games like this in our three years, so every time you get something like this, you learn a little bit more. It is something we will break down in video and say, 'Look at how when after we score, we let down and they came after us.' It is the prime time to get a goal scored against you as we saw tonight."
