PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Sophomore freestyler Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team has been named Big Ten Conference co-Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 9). Vanderkaay led the Maize and Blue to the University team title at the three-day U.S. Open last weekend in Federal Way, Wash., as he had three top-four individual finishes and helped two Michigan relays to second- and third-place showings.

Vanderkaay opened his weekend with a runner-up performance in the 400 free when he clocked in with an NCAA automatic time of 3:52.94, just 1.07 seconds behind Club Wolverine's Klete Keller (3:51.87) for the event title.
On the second day of competition, Vanderkaay turned in a frouth-place showing in the 200 free as he touched the wall in an NCAA B standard time of 1:50.84. In his final individual performance in the water, the sophomore took third place in the 1,500 freestyle with a time of 15:27.50, his second NCAA automatic qualifying performance of the weekend.
It marks the fifth Big Ten weekly honor of Vanderkaay's career and his third of the season. The regining Big Ten Freshman of the Year was tabbed the league's top swimmer back-to-back weeks in November, following a successful weekend at No. 1 Auburn and No. 10 Georiga (Nov. 12) during a two-day dual meet against No. 2 Texas (Nov. 18).
The Wolverines return to college competition when they host Stanford over the Jan. 9-10 weekend in Canham Natatorium.
