Vanderkaay Not Enough in Loss to Top-Ranked Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 130-108 at No. 1 Auburn in a long-course meters dual meet Friday afternoon (Nov. 7) at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center. Sophomore Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) led the Wolverines (2-1) with a pair of individual event victories, winning both the 400- and 800-meter freestyles.
Vanderkaay earned his first of the two individual event wins with a first-place showing in the 800-meter freestyle. The reigning Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year posted a time of 8:26.11 to win the event, clocking in 1.84 seconds ahead of teammate Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Trafalger HS), who turned in a runner-up showing at 8:27.95.
Vanderkaay later earned an event victory in the 400-meter freestyle when he posted a time of 3:57.45. The time was just 0.41 seconds ahead of Auburn's B.J. Jones second-place time of 3:57.86.
Sophomore Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) posted Michigan's only other event victory of the evening (without an Auburn exhibition) when he clocked in with a time of 2:02.86 to win the 200-meter butterfly. Tarwater's time was just 0.05 seconds behind the NCAA consideration time for the event (2:02.81).
Following Tarwater to the wall was teammate Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS), who finished second with a time of 2:06.26.
Senior captain Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) posted the first NCAA consideration time of the season for the Wolverines when he finished second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:52.99. Ketchum's clocking was 0.24 seconds better than the NCAA standard of 1:53.24.
The Wolverines return to action Saturday (Nov. 8) when they travel to Athens, Ga., for a short-course meters dual meet with No. 10 Georiga. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Gabrielsen Natatorium.
