Early Third-Period Goals Help Miami Down Wolverines

OXFORD, Ohio -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team dropped the first game of its Central Collegiate Hockey Association season by a score of 8-3 at Miami (Ohio) on Friday (Oct. 10) at Goggin Ice Arena. The RedHawks converted 4-of-5 power-play opportunities in the contest, scoring three goals in the first six minutes of the third period to sway the game's momentum in their favor.
Sophomore Jeff Tambellini (Port Moody, B.C.) had two points (1-1-2) in the losing effort for Michigan (1-1, 0-1 CCHA), which lost its CCHA opener for the first time in five seasons. Miami forward Derek Edwardson had a hat trick and assisted on two other goals for the RedHawks.
Miami pressured the Wolverines from the beginning of the contest, securing the game's first scoring chance midway through the first period. After cycling the puck through the U-M defensive zone, Miami's Todd Grant took a slap shot from the left point that made its way thorough traffic to sophomore goaltender Al Montoya (Glenview, Ill.). Montoya got the top of his right pad on the puck, deflecting it into the corner.
Milan Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) created a Michigan opportunity from the red line with a pass cross-ice to Brandon Kaleniecki (Livonia, Mich.), who broke into the Miami zone on the left side with seven minutes left in the frame. RedHawk freshman goalie Brandon Crawford-West, making his Miami debut, continued the game's strong goalkeeping with a quick glove save on Kaleniecki's wrist shot.
Miami had a near-goal when Grant intercepted a Wolveirne clearance to keep the puck in the zone. Facing just two U-M defenders, Grant fed Edwardson a pass behind the pair. Montoya came out to the top of the crease to force Edwardson behind the net without a shot. However, Edwardson sent a backhand pass behind Montoya, through the crease to Grant. Grant could not get a stick on it, though, and the puck was cleared to the corner.
The play ended with a cross-checking penalty on Brandon Rogers (Rochester, N.H.) with 14:48 elapsed. The RedHawks capitalized on the chance midway through the man advantage with a goal from Grant. Moving the puck from point to point, Grant fired a slapshot through traffic from atop the right circle to beat Montoya.
Michigan rallied quickly with a power-play tally of its own; T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) depositing the puck into an empty net at 2:17 for his second marker of the season. Tambellini began the play with a heavy shot from the point that caromed off Crawford-West's left pad and into the right corner. As Rogers pinched in to collect it, traffic in front of the net kept Crawford-West out of position. Rogers quickly fired the pass across the rink to Hensick on the left boards. The U-M freshman stepped off the dasherboards and fired into the open net, as Crawford-West scrambled to get back into position.
The RedHawks would take a 2-1 lead into the locker room, however, as Edwardson notched Miami's second power-play goal of the game with only 48 seconds on the clock. Edwardson beat Montoya high to the glove side with a wrister inside the left circle.
Crawford-West continued to stymie the Maize and Blue to start the second period. In the first minutes of play, Nystrom found himself alone in front of the net but could not put the puck past the sprawling Crawford-West despite two opportunities on the doorstep.
Miami's penalty kill put the RedHawks ahead 3-1 just two minutes into the second frame. Tambellini jumped off the left boards to take a shot from the point but fell to his knees. His attempt to swat the puck away missed and Edwardson pounced on the loose puck. In recovery, Tambellini kept Edwardson from moving in on Montoya, but the RedHawk senior fired a low shot that found daylight.
Mike Brown (Northbrook, Ill.) had a scoring chance after Dwight Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) kept the puck in the Miami zone at 12:54. Helminen took the puck into the corner before finding Brown in the crease with a backhanded pass. Brown's shot went low, allowing Crawford-West to get his right pad down for the shot.
Kaleniecki was the next Wolverine who was unable to solve the Miami keeper minutes later. With U-M on the power play, Kaleniecki found the puck in the crease, sending his shot high. Crawford-West made a quick glove save to help his side remain two ahead.
David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) notched the first goal of his Michigan career on a bad-angle shot during U-M's seventh power-play chance. Rohlfs caught a good bounce to bring the Maize and Blue within a goal, 3-2, when his centering pass deflected off of Crawford-West's pad and into the net with 3:29 remaining in the period.
Miami's power play continued to play well and put the game out of reach, netting a goal just 20 seconds into the third period. Mike Kompon scored the power-play marker, then just one minute later Greg Hogeboom notched Miami's fifth tally of the contest after picking off a Michigan pass at its blue line.
Michigan fell behind 6-2 with 14:10 remaining in the contest. Freshman forward Marty Guerin emerged with the puck along the goal line from a scrum in the right corner, firing a low shot through Montoya's pads.
The RedHawks continued to pressure the Wolverines and improved to 3-for-5 with a man advantage with a tally by Chris Michael with 11:37 remaining. Michael took the pass from Hogeboom before taking a wrist shot from the right circle.
Edwardson notched the hat trick with an unassisted tally at 10:22.
The Wolverines did put one goal back on the board with 4:29 remaining. Following three strong stops by Crawford-West, Tambellini jammed the puck across the goal line to make the score 8-3.
The Maize and Blue will complete the weekend series at Miami (Ohio) tomorrow night (Saturday, Oct. 11) in Oxford, Ohio. The opening faceoff is slated for a 7:35 p.m. drop.
