OXFORD, Ohio -- The University of Michigan hockey team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory against Miami (Ohio) Saturday night (Oct. 11) at Goggin Ice Arena. Sophomore goalie Al Montoya (Glenview, Ill.) made 33 saves in the contest to keep the Wolverines ahead.
Freshman forward David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) netted the game-winning goal midway through the first period, giving Michigan a quick 2-0 lead. That proved to be all the offense Montoya needed, as he kept the RedHawks (1-3, 1-1 CCHA) off the scoreboard until late in the third period.
Michigan (2-1, 1-1 CCHA) jumped out an early 1-0 lead on a strong individual play from junior Charlie Henderson (East Lansing, Mich.). Henderson began the series by dumping the puck deep in the Miami corner. As Miami moved the puck back up ice, Henderson took the puck off the stick of a RedHawk defender and went in on goal. As the final Miami defender moved to cover the pass, Henderson fired a low shot on MU goalie Steve Hartley, who made the initial save. Henderson pounced on the rebound, however, slipping the puck past the keeper for the 1-0 lead at 17:41.
David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) put Michigan up by two with his second goal of the weekend at 12:57, tracking down a Matt Hunwick (Roseville, Mich.) lead pass behind the RedHawk defense. As the puck reached the goal line, Rohlfs dove to the ice to sweep the puck on goal despite the bad angle and managed to beat Hartley before running into the boards.
With Michigan on its third power-play, Miami generated a shorthanded chance from inside the Michigan redline. Nick Martens (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had a good defensive play, however, poking the puck away before Miami could get a shot on Montoya.
The Maize and Blue dodged a bullet while killing Jason Dest's (Fraser, Mich.) major penalty for roughing. Montoya easily handled a soft shot from the Miami blueline at 2:17 in the last minute of the kill, however, in trying to play the puck out of the zone he dropped it too far ahead and Miami recovered with an open net. Michigan managed to force the ensuing shot wide of the net to avert a Miami goal.
Montoya kept Miami off the board, as Todd Grant cut in front of the net to one-time a pass from the corner toward the goal at 14:47. Facing the right corner, Montoya reached back to his lower left side of the goal and just got his glove on the puck. The U-M goalie turned away a second shot before Michigan could regain posession.
Montoya came up big again midway through the period as Miami had a shorthanded break. Mike Kompon led a two-on-one down the right boards and dished the puck to Derek Edwardson in the slot. Montoya found a piece of Edwardson's shot and was able to cover the puck before Edwardson could get to the rebound.
The Wolverines' best chance of the period came with 2:36 remaining. David Moss (Livonia, Mich.) brought the puck into the zone, stopping along the left hash marks before passing back to Martens. Martens' shot got by Hartley but hit the post. Miami also hit a post before the period ended.
Michigan's penalty kill was tested to begin the third period, spending the first 4:27 either four-on-four or with a man down. Montoya made a sliding save to keep the 2-0 lead with U-M playing four-on-three.
Miami's Edwardson got Miami on the board at 7:51 with a shot from the slot that beat Montoya on the glove side. Edwardson's tally came after teammate Marty Guerin took the puck over in the right corner following a dump-in by Grant.
Michigan returns to Ann Arbor to host Quinnipiac next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 17-18) at Yost Ice Arena. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:35 p.m. Friday night's game will be broadcast in New England on the New England Sports Network.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Red Berenson
On Michigan's goaltending ... "Al Montoya had a great game for us. He came up with the kind of goalkeeping that you need on the road when you're facing a team that is as good as Miami. I thought he was excellent."
On David Rohlfs' game-winning goal ... "What a great effort. You talk about a second effort going to the goal. I don't know if he was tripped or if he fell; I couldn't tell, but he took a tumble into the boards head first. I'm sure he'll be alright but I want to make sure."
On changing the lines before the game ... "We changed one player on each line and then with Rohlfs out we had to double-shift some lines depending on who was playing or who was in the penalty box."
Sophomore Goaltender Al Montoya
On the difference between the two games ... "Tonight I think we wanted it more. Right off the bat, we never gave up. Even when we kept getting those penalties, we kept going right after them. We knew the only way to give them life would be on the power play so we shut that down, shut the team down."
