Matt Hunwick '07 was named a volunteer assistant coach in September 2019.
A native of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Hunwick was four-year letterwinner at U-M and led the Wolverines to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and three Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) championships. Hunwick served as team captain during his senior year in which he earned All-American honors, CCHA Defensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference accolades.
A 2004 NHL Entry Draft selection of the Boston Bruins, Hunwick spent 12 years playing in the NHL. In August it was determined Hunwick would be unable to compete for the Buffalo Sabres during the 2019-20 season due to a neck condition.Â
In 535 career NHL games, Hunwick played for six franchises, starting his career with Boston, the organization that drafted him in 2004. He spent four seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, one with New York Rangers, two with the Toronto Maple Leafs, one with Pittsburgh Penguins before joining the Sabres in 2018-19. He collected 119 points on the blue line scoring 25 goals and 94 assists.
