ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team used a three-goal second half to pull away from Eastern Michigan for a 5-1 win this afternoon (Sunday, Sept. 8) at U-M Soccer Field. The No. 9-ranked Wolverines (4-0) received a goal and an assist apiece from strikers Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) and Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) and had goals from three other players in the win.
Michigan took an early two-goal lead over Eastern Michigan (1-3) with tallies in the 14th and 21st minutes of action. The Maize and Blue's first goal came after sophomore midfielder Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) sent Heaton's initial cross back across the box onto the head of freshman Stephanie Boyles (Arvada, Colo./Pomona HS). Seven minutes later, Heaton made a nice move just outside the 18-yard box to shake her defender and deposited Crumpton's pass into the right corner of the net.
Eastern drew within one goal right before halftime when an Eagle corner kick found the head of junior forward Jessica Hupe. Hupe's header was initially stopped by Michigan keeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School), but the rebound found Hupe's foot and was knocked into the goal.
The Maize and Blue pulled away in the second half, governing play throughout the stanza with 12 shots to EMU's one. The tide turned for good at 48:25 when senior defender Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) found the back of the net with a shot from nearly 40 yards away from the goal to give the Wolverines a 3-1 advantage.
Michigan extended its lead with goals from Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) at 73:06 and Crumpton with just 15 seconds remaining in the game. Both markers were set up by nice plays from Kleinholz and Tammy Mitchell (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Seaholm HS), respectively.
Grech made three saves in 45 minutes of action for the Wolverines. Freshman goalie Rebecca Bald (Geneva, Ill./Geneva HS) played in net during the second half, making one save.
The Wolverines hit the road for the first time this season for the University of Alabama-Birmingham Nike Classic in Birmingham, Ala. Michigan faces Massachusetts Friday (Sept. 13) at 5 p.m. and takes on Georgia Sunday (Sept. 15) at noon.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On Michigan's tale of two halves ... "We were definitely not happy with our performance in the first half. We weren't sharp and we let them come at us instead of taking the play to them. They played well in the first half and we just weren't mentally sharp enough. Obviously, the second half was big for us. It was like it was a new game and we were creating numerous and dangerous opportunities. We moved the ball around a lot better and that made a lot of difference."
On the turning point of the game ... "I think it was from right at the start of the second half. The game really turned around for us. Certainly the goals made a difference, but it was mainly the change in intensity that changed the game."
On Michigan's depth ... "I'm able to go to the bench and really not expect a drop-off. At any point during the game I can look at the bench and see people who have played a lot before and have experience at a high level with us. I'm comfortable with all the options I have there and it helps tremendously to have that during a game."
U-M Senior Defender Amy Sullivant
On her goal from 40 yards out ... "The ball came to me and I looked up at the goal and saw that there was an open spot to shoot at, so I just went for it. Luckily everything worked out when it needed to, the ball dipped at the right time and the goalie was just enough out of the net that the ball had room to go in."
