ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The National Collegiate Athletic Association has announced that the 2003 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Northeast Region Championships will be hosted by the University of Michigan on Saturday, April 12, 2003.
Michigan, which has won four regional championship titles in the last six years, will be hosting the regional competition at Crisler Arena for the fourth time in the program's history. U-M has advanced to the national championships in each of the last 10 years and has participated in the NCAA Super Six team finals seven times.
Ann Arbor will be one of six NCAA Regional sites, with the top two teams from each regional advancing to the NCAA National Championships, hosted by the University of Nebraska April 24-26 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. The five other regional hosts are the University of Alabama (Central Region), University of Utah (North Central), University of Missouri (South Central), University of Georgia (Southeast) and the University of Washington (West).
Michigan has hosted three previous NCAA Regional Championships (1995, 1997 and 2001) and advanced to the NCAA National Championships each time. In 1997 and 2001 the team finished first to advance to the national championships, while the 1995 squad was the regional runner-up to Alabama.
The NCAA Regional Championships have been a positive experience for gymnastics fans as well as the team. Two of the top three crowds in Michigan women's gymnastics history are from previous regional championships, with crowds of 4,378 in 1995 and 4,072 in 1997.
Michigan finished seventh at the 2002 NCAA Championships, captured second at the NCAA Northeast Region Championships, and won its 10th Big Ten title in 11 years last season.
